Manipulation of Covalent Organic Frameworks by Side-Chain Functionalization: Toward Few Layer Nanosheets

Ankita De et al.

Summary: This study explores the tunability of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) and their processability. Anchoring alkoxy side chains to the COF backbone elongates the interlayer distance, leading to the successful exfoliation into nanosheets. The nanosheets show stability in dispersion, hydrophobic surface properties, and potential applications in lithium-ion battery separators.

Probing a Hydrogen-π Interaction Involving a Trapped Water Molecule in the Solid State

Ettore Bartalucci et al.

Summary: In this study, proton-detected solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) experiments were used to detect a single water molecule trapped in a lanthanide complex by analyzing three types of non-covalent interactions. The water proton resonances were detected at a chemical-shift value close to zero ppm, which was further confirmed by quantum-chemical calculations. Density Functional Theory calculations revealed the sensitivity of the proton chemical-shift value for hydrogen-pi interactions. This study highlights the importance of proton-detected solid-state NMR in probing weak non-covalent interactions in molecular recognition events in chemistry and biology.

Discovering the Solid-State Secrets of Lorlatinib by NMR Crystallography: To Hydrogen Bond or not to Hydrogen Bond

Zainab Rehman et al.

Summary: Lorlatinib is an active pharmaceutical ingredient used to treat lung cancer. This study presents the NMR crystallography analysis of Lorlatinib, combining single-crystal X-ray diffraction structure determination, solid-state NMR, and NMR chemical shift calculation. The crystal structure of Lorlatinib is described, including the presence of intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The study also demonstrates the resolution enhancement in MAS NMR at a higher Larmor frequency.

Redox-Active Metaphosphate-Like Terminals Enable High-Capacity MXene Anodes for Ultrafast Na-Ion Storage

Boya Sun et al.

Summary: This study reports on the construction of redox-active phosphorus-oxygen terminals as an attractive strategy to significantly enhance the specific capacities of Nb4C3 MXenes for ultrafast Na+ storage. The molecular-level design of MXene terminals provides opportunities for developing high-capacity and fast-charging electrodes, alleviating the energy-power tradeoff typical for energy-storage devices.

Control of Crystallinity of Vinylene-Linked Two-Dimensional Conjugated Polymers by Rational Monomer Design

Dominik L. Pastoetter et al.

Summary: The interest in two-dimensional conjugated polymers (2D CPs), especially vinylene-linked structures, has increased significantly in recent years. However, the synthesis of these polymers through the Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons (HWE) reaction remains largely unexplored. This study reveals the control of crystallinity in 2D CPs through solvothermal synthesis, with the use of fluorinated phosphonates and rigid aldehyde building blocks playing a crucial role in enhancing crystallinity.

Aggregated Structures of Two-Dimensional Covalent Organic Frameworks

Chengjun Kang et al.

Summary: This study reports the use of C-13 solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (C-13 SSNMR) to investigate the aggregated structures of 2D COFs. The research finds that C-13 SSNMR can distinguish different aggregated structures and quantify the AA stacking structure. The study also reveals the existence of offset stacking structures that have not been reported before. The results provide important insights into the structures of 2D COFs and their potential applications.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Crystalline Imine-Based Covalent Organic Framework with Triazine Node and Biphenyl Linker and Its Fluorinated Derivate for CO2/CH4 Separation

Stefanie Buegel et al.

Summary: A catalyst-free Schiff base reaction was used to synthesize two imine-linked covalent organic frameworks. The resulting products were characterized and found to have high surface areas. The larger-scale synthesis products were applied to prepare mixed-matrix membranes, with one of the membranes exhibiting higher CO2/CH4 selectivity and permeability.
