Mapping Chinese annual gross primary productivity with eddy covariance measurements and machine learning

Xian-Jin Zhu et al.

Summary: This study conducted a regional study of annual gross primary productivity (AGPP) for grain production and terrestrial carbon sequestration based on 641 site measurements in China. The optimal mapping scheme was determined by analyzing various prediction tools, variable combinations, and mapping approaches, and the random forest regression tree model performed the best in predicting observed AGPP variations. Mapping AGPP through predicting AGPP per leaf area (PAGPP) showed the superior performance in explaining AGPP variations. This study provides a methodological support for mapping regional AGPP from site measurements.

Underestimated Interannual Variability of Terrestrial Vegetation Production by Terrestrial Ecosystem Models

Shangrong Lin et al.

Summary: This study found that current TEMs substantially underestimate the interannual variability (IAV) of GPP, especially in nonforest ecosystem types. One possible cause is that the models underestimate the changes of canopy physiology responding to climate change. The differences between the simulated and observed interannual variations of leaf area index (LAI) also contribute to the underestimation of IAV.

Satellite evidence for China's leading role in restoring vegetation productivity over global karst ecosystems

Xuguang Tang et al.

Summary: Karst ecosystems cover approximately 20% of Earth's land surface and have unique and vulnerable characteristics. This study examines vegetation productivity in global karst areas using satellite data. The results show a greening trend in most of the world's karst areas, with China and the EU leading in vegetation greening. China's grain-for-green program and deforestation in Brazil are major factors influencing these trends.

Perspectives on the role of terrestrial ecosystems in the 'carbon neutrality' strategy

Shilong Piao et al.

Summary: The Chinese government has set a goal to achieve 'carbon neutrality' by 2060, with the terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink currently offsetting a significant portion of national emissions. This study provides perspectives on the role of terrestrial ecosystems in the 'carbon neutrality' strategy. The researchers argue that the observed carbon sink is a result of ecosystem responses to environmental changes rather than an intrinsic ecosystem function. They also discuss the long-term effects of CO2 changes and afforestation on China's carbon sink and propose optimizing the terrestrial carbon sink pathway to maximize its contribution to the 'carbon neutrality' strategy.

Effects of ecosystem types on the spatial variations in annual gross primary productivity over terrestrial ecosystems of China

Xian-Jin Zhu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the effects of ecosystem types on the spatial variations in annual gross primary productivity (AGPP) in terrestrial ecosystems of China. The results showed significant differences in AGPP among different ecosystem types and vegetation regions, with climate and biotic factors playing important roles in driving the spatial variations in AGPP.

Joint control of alpine meadow productivity by plant phenology and photosynthetic capacity

Tao Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of global climate change on alpine meadows. The results indicate that temperature and water conditions play a crucial role in plant phenology and photosynthetic capacity, ultimately affecting the gross primary productivity. These findings are important for predicting future changes in alpine meadow ecosystems.

Grassland changes and adaptive management on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Yanfen Wang et al.

Summary: This review examines the impacts of climate change and human activities on grasslands in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. It discusses the changes in vegetation and soil, as well as the drivers behind these changes. The study finds that rising temperatures have been key in driving vegetation increases, while intense livestock grazing has caused grassland degradation. Effective restoration can be achieved through management policies and adaptive management, leading to improvements in net primary production.

Accelerated increase in vegetation carbon sequestration in China after 2010: A turning point resulting from climate and human interaction

Yongzhe Chen et al.

Summary: China has significantly increased its vegetation coverage and terrestrial carbon sequestration capacity since the end of the 20th century, with both climate change and human activities playing comparable roles in the gains of gross primary production (GPP). Afforestation has been the dominant mechanism behind forest cover expansions in northern China, while climate change has promoted vegetation cover in most parts of southeastern China. Human activities, especially in southern, eastern, and northeastern China, have greatly contributed to the increasing trend in net primary production (NPP) during 2001-2018.

A fine-resolution soil moisture dataset for China in 2002-2018

Xiangjin Meng et al.

Summary: This study provides a high-resolution soil moisture dataset for China from 2002 to 2018, which overcomes the limitations of coarse spatial resolution of microwave data. The dataset shows cyclical fluctuations and a slight downward trend in soil moisture across China, with wet conditions in the south and dry conditions in the north.
