Ir Nanoparticles Anchored on Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Overall Water Splitting under pH-Universal Conditions

Jun Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, an advanced electrocatalyst was developed by anchoring well-dispersed Ir nanoparticles on nickel metal-organic framework (MOF) Ni-NDC nanosheets. The synthesized Ir@Ni-NDC exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and overall water splitting in a wide pH range, surpassing commercial benchmarks and most reported electrocatalysts. Theoretical calculations revealed that the charge redistribution of Ni-O-Ir bridge optimized the adsorption of H2O, OH*, and H*, leading to accelerated electrochemical kinetics for HER and OER. This work provides a new clue for the development of bifunctional electrocatalysts for pH-universal overall water splitting.

Arming Ru with Oxygen-Vacancy-Enriched RuO2 Sub-Nanometer Skin Activates Superior Bifunctionality for pH-Universal Overall Water Splitting

Yapeng Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes an effective modification strategy by coating a sub-nanometer RuO2 layer with abundant oxygen vacancies onto interconnected Ru clusters/carbon hybrid microsheet (Ru@V-RuO2/C HMS). This material inherits the high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of Ru and activates superior activity toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in both acid and alkaline conditions. The modified material achieves an ultralow overpotential for OER and HER and can drive overall water splitting with an ultrasmall cell voltage.

Descriptors for the Evaluation of Electrocatalytic Reactions: d-Band Theory and Beyond

Shilong Jiao et al.

Summary: Closing the carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen cycle with renewable electricity offers potential solutions for the current environmental and energy crisis, while also supporting the continued prosperity of human society. Descriptors play a crucial role in bridging the gap between the physicochemical factors of electrocatalysts and their enhanced activity, providing guiding principles for the rational design process. By following indicators like d-band center, Delta G(H), E-O*, coordination number (CN), and bond length, it is possible to access the optimal adsorption strength of key intermediates.

Exclusive Strain Effect Boosts Overall Water Splitting in PdCu/Ir Core/Shell Nanocrystals

Menggang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, precise synthesis of PdCu/Ir core/shell nanocrystals was reported, which significantly boosted oxygen evolution reaction (OER) through the exclusive strain effect. The compressive strain in the Ir shell downshifted the d-band center and weakened the binding of the intermediates, leading to enhanced OER activity. The strained nanocrystals also exhibited improved hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, making them excellent catalysts for overall water-splitting electrocatalysis.
