Membraneless electrolyzers for the production of low-cost, high-purity green hydrogen: A techno-economic analysis

Alessandro Manzotti et al.

Summary: Hydrogen is an ideal energy carrier for a sustainable economy, but its current production methods, such as steam reforming and coal gasification, are polluting and energy-intensive. This article focuses on membraneless electrolyzers as a potentially more cost-effective and profitable alternative for hydrogen production, with a levelized cost of hydrogen around 2 USD/kg(H2).

Projecting the future cost of PEM and alkaline water electrolysers; a CAPEX model including electrolyser plant size and technology development

Anita H. Reksten et al.

Summary: This study assesses the technology costs of alkaline electrolysers and PEM electrolysers, and provides an outlook towards 2030. The analysis predicts a significant decrease in the investment cost gap between alkaline electrolysers and PEM electrolysers in the 1-10 MW range by 2030. For large scale plants, only marginal cost reductions can be expected, with further cost reductions possible in subsequent years.

Economic assessment of local solar module assembly in a global market

Mohammad Dehghanimadvar et al.

Summary: This study presents a cost model that evaluates the opportunity for local photovoltaic (PV) module assembly in a competitive global market, incorporating important supply-chain aspects such as trade and logistics costs. The analysis demonstrates that with economies of scale and sufficient demand, locally assembled modules from imported materials can compete with the price of imported modules.

Modeling alkaline water electrolysis for power-to-x applications: A scheduling approach

Christopher Varela et al.

Summary: A novel scheduling model for alkaline water electrolysis is formulated as a mixed-integer linear program, allowing for efficient reaction to different energy scenarios. The model enables finding the optimal number of electrolyzers and production schedules when dealing with large data sets of intermittent energy and electricity price, achieving a balance between hydrogen production, energy absorption, and operation costs.

Temperature optimization for improving polymer electrolyte membrane-water electrolysis system efficiency

Fabian Scheepers et al.

Summary: This study focuses on optimizing stack temperature during the electrolysis process. It concludes that the optimal stack temperature depends solely on electrode pressure and cell voltage, and analyzes how this optimization can significantly reduce hydrogen permeation at low current densities. By combining temperature and pressure optimization, the challenging safety issues of pressurized electrolysis can be eliminated and the efficiency of the entire system can be maximized.

Comprehensive Investigation of Solar-Based Hydrogen and Electricity Production in Iran

Rasool Kalbasi et al.

Summary: The study found that the Jask station in Iran is the best site for solar hydrogen production, while the Darab station is the worst. Additionally, the Bushehr and Deyr stations were deemed suitable, whereas the Anzali and Khalkhal stations were not. Based on a geographic information system map, it was determined that the southern half of Iran, particularly the coasts of the Persian Gulf and the sea of Oman, is suitable for hydrogen production, while the northern, northeastern, northwestern, and one region in southern Iran are not suitable.
