Buckling instability and compressive deformation of Ni-Co-Cr medium-entropy alloy nanotubes

Yu-Sheng Lu et al.

Summary: The aspect ratio has a significant effect on buckling instability, with the critical buckling stress decreasing as the aspect ratio increases. Molecular dynamics simulation shows that the NiCoCr medium-entropy alloy nanotubes exhibit instability when the aspect ratio reaches 10. Single-crystalline specimens have higher compressive strength compared to polycrystalline specimens.

Structural transformation and strain localization at twin boundaries in Al0.4CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy

Dinh-Quan Doan et al.

Summary: The surface nanotribological properties and subsurface damage of Al0.4CoCrFeNi high-entropy alloy during nanoscratching processes were investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the surface wear characteristics and scratching-induced surface damage were significantly influenced by the crystallographic orientation, twin boundary spacing, and inclination angle. The friction coefficient was highest for the [001] crystallographic orientation, indicating the most restricted movement of the indenter in this substrate. The microstructure evolution revealed the formation of Lomer-Cottrell and Hirth dislocation locks due to the different angles between slip systems. Both the Hall-Petch and inverse Hall-Petch relationships were observed for the twin boundary spacing, and the maximum indentation force was achieved at a tilt angle of 0 degrees due to the interactions between dislocations and twin boundaries. The microstructure evolution and atomic flow were greatly influenced by the twin boundary spacing and inclination angle, with twin boundary migration being a significant factor. Furthermore, the surface morphology varied between workpieces due to elastic recovery, dislocation nucleation, and slipping, indicating that the wear volume depended on the material microstructure.

Interfacial characteristics and their impact on the indentation behavior of CuTa/CuTa amorphous/amorphous nanolaminates

Dinh-Quan Doan

Summary: This study systematically investigates the indentation behavior of Cu80Ta20/Cu20Ta80 amorphous/amorphous nanolaminates using molecular dynamics simulation. The results show that the mechanical properties of the nanolaminates are strongly dependent on the layer thickness and interface, as well as the indenter size, loading velocity, and surface layer.

Deformation and machining mechanism of nanocrystalline NiCoCrFe high entropy alloys

Summary: The effects of composition, grain sizes, and cutting depths on the deformation behaviors and sub-surface damages of scratched NiCoCrFe high entropy alloys are investigated. The results show that the alloy composition and grain sizes affect the ability to remove atoms during the cutting process, and the grain boundaries play a vital role in blocking dislocation propagation and stacking fault development.

Effects of crystal orientation and twin boundary distance on mechanical properties of FeNiCrCoCu high-entropy alloy under nanoindentation

Dinh-Quan Doan

Summary: The influence of crystal orientation and twinning on the mechanical properties and microstructure development of equiatomic FeNiCrCoCu high-entropy alloy was investigated using nanoindentation and molecular dynamics. The study found that crystal orientation affects substrate hardness and loading curves, while decreasing twin boundary distance enhances material strength and ductility. Additionally, the evolution of microstructure is influenced by interaction between sliding system and twinning, with various surface morphologies dominated by sliding mechanism along primary sliding system.

Effect of crystallographic orientation on mechanical properties of single-crystal CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy

Yuming Qi et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of crystallographic orientation on the mechanical properties and microstructure evolution of single-crystal high-entropy alloys is explored using molecular dynamics simulation. It is found that crystallographic orientations strongly affect slip mode, stress distribution, and plastic behavior, with [111]-oriented samples exhibiting distinct pop-in behaviors. The relationship between dislocation density and hardness is linear and dependent on crystallographic orientation.

Simulations of primary damage in a High Entropy Alloy: Probing enhanced radiation resistance

O. R. Deluigi et al.

Summary: Research has shown that high entropy alloys exhibit a lower average number of defects in the early stages of radiation damage response compared to pure Ni, but there is no significant difference in defect evolution during the cascade, indicating that the radiation resistance of high entropy alloys may not be due to a reduction in primary damage caused by chemical disorder, but probably caused by longer-time defect evolution.

Effects of void and inclusion sizes on mechanical response and failure mechanism of AlCrCuFeNi2 high-entropy alloy

Dinh-Quan Doan et al.

Summary: The study found that there is a critical value of mechanical parameters for samples with an inclusion size of 15 angstrom under tension, and increasing void size and decreasing strain rate lead to a decrease in mechanical parameters. Deformation behavior is influenced by voids and inclusions, with shear bands propagating at a 45-degree angle.

Atomistic insights into the deformation mechanism of a CoCrNi medium entropy alloy under nanoindentation

Summary: Understanding contact-induced behavior in metals is crucial for studying mechanical properties. Nanoindentation studies on CoCrNi MEA revealed unique dislocation nucleation at Cr-rich clusters, contrary to conventional homogeneous nucleation in pure metals. Compositional inhomogeneity and temperature were found to influence defect behavior, with nanotwin formation and phase-transformation promoted at low temperatures.
