Enhancing the machinability of Cf/SiC composite with the assistance of laser-induced oxidation during milling

Guolong Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel hybrid machining process called laser-induced oxidation-assisted milling (LOAM) was proposed to enhance the machinability of Cf/SiC composites. The LOAM process improved material removal rate, tool life, and surface quality by inducing a reaction between the composites and oxygen. The results showed that LOAM achieved high-efficiency processing and low-defect surfaces when machining Cf/SiC composites.

Progressive failure analysis of needle-punched C/SiC composites based on multiscale finite element model

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a multiscale model combining the finite element method was established to analyze the progressive failure of needle-punched C/SiC composites. Microscopic failure modes under different loads were first analyzed using Micro-RVE, and then coupled with a damage evolution model to calculate the stress-strain relationship and macroscopic failure mode. The strength reduction of the composite under tensile-torsional coupling load was also analyzed. This study effectively revealed the damage evolution process, the relationship between macroscopic load and microscopic failure, and the tensile-torsional coupling failure mechanism of needle-punched C/SiC composites.

Effects of ultrasonic vibration assisted milling with laser ablation pretreatment on fatigue performance and machining efficiency of SiCf/ SiC composites

Chenguang Wang et al.

Summary: Due to the poor machinability of SiCf/SiC parts, many problems arise, such as low efficiency, poor quality, and high cost, which limit its manufacturing and application. A novel process called UVAMLAP was proposed to optimize the fatigue performance and machining efficiency of SiCf/SiC parts. The results showed that UVAMLAP improved surface quality and increased tensile strength by 9.4% and residual tensile strength by 13.5%. The process can prevent damage aggravation, weaken fractures and debonding, and reduce fatigue performance degradation caused by machining damage. Additionally, it reduced machining time by 31.3% and tool cost by 75%.

Machinability improvement in milling of SiCf/SiC composites based on laser controllable ablation pretreatment

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: The poor machinability of SiCf/SiC composites greatly limits its application and promotion. The laser-induced ablation products of SiCf/SiC composites are powdery, loose, and porous. A laser ablation pretreatment milling (LAPM) process was proposed to improve the machining efficiency and machinability of SiCf/SiC composites. LAPM could achieve the cutting allowance in only one pass after laser ablation treatment, greatly reducing the processing time and improving the material removal rate.

Investigations of the mechanical and high-temperature tribological properties of the Inconel 718 alloy formed by selective laser melting

JinFang Peng et al.

Summary: Selective laser melting (SLM) is a 3D printing technology used for manufacturing high-precision metal parts with complex geometries. This study focused on investigating the microstructure, microhardness, and tensile strength of an Inconel 718 superalloy synthesized using SLM technology. The wear characteristics of the alloy at various temperatures were examined, and the wear damage mechanisms were analyzed. The study found that SLM-formed Inconel 718 had columnar grains with improved dispersion along the horizontal axis, higher microhardness in the vertical plane, and higher horizontal tensile strength compared to the vertical direction.

Menghua Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different fibre orientations of 2D-Cf/SiC on the grinding force, surface roughness, and surface/subsurface micromorphology in ultrasonic-assisted grinding. The results show that brittle fracture is the predominant material removal mode, and various forms of material breakage occur. Ultrasonic-assisted grinding can effectively decrease the grinding force and improve the surface integrity.

Modelling and grinding characteristics of unidirectional C-SiCs

Shuoshuo Qu et al.

Summary: This study establishes a theoretical model and a numerical simulation model to research the micro-MRM of C-SiCs, and proves their reliability through experiments. The results show that fiber pull-out, fiber outcrop, matrix cracking, and interfacial debonding are the basic defects in C-SiCs. As the grinding depth increases, the grinding performance of C-SiCs gradually deteriorates.

Summary: This study investigated the removal behavior and surface integrity of C-f/SiC composites during abrasive belt grinding using rubber contact wheels of various hardness. Results revealed that with decreasing hardness of the contact wheel, the surface roughness, grinding force, and temperature decreased significantly. Moreover, the surface and subsurface morphology of the composites also changed.
