Evaluation of the Datura peels derived biochar-based Anode for enhancing power output in microbial fuel cell application

Anusha Vempaty et al.

Summary: Activated biochar derived from Datura metel peel was synthesized and investigated as an anode material in a microbial fuel cell for the first time. The biochar demonstrated high efficiency in chemical oxygen demand elimination and achieved peak power density of 584.2 mW/m2 when loaded at 1 mg/cm2. The presence of spherical carbon nanoparticles in the biochar enhanced electrolyte diffusion and promoted enhanced biofilm formation.

Microbial Fuel Cell Construction Features and Application for Sustainable Wastewater Treatment

Hridoy Roy et al.

Summary: A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a system that utilizes microorganisms' metabolic activity to generate electricity. MFCs can be used in wastewater treatment plants to convert organic matter into electricity and remove pollutants. By oxidizing organic matter in the anode electrode, microorganisms generate electrons that flow to the cathode compartment, while also producing clean water as a byproduct. MFCs offer a more energy-efficient alternative to traditional wastewater treatment plants, reducing operational costs and greenhouse gas emissions.

In vivo degradation of polyethylene terephthalate using microbial isolates from plastic polluted environment

Baskaran Maheswaran et al.

Summary: The accumulation of plastics poses a worldwide environmental risk. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) degrades slowly and produces hazardous substances, highlighting the need to eliminate plastic waste from the environment. This study focuses on the potential of naturally occurring microbial strains isolated from plastic waste dumping sites to degrade PET. The results show that a microbial consortium (S. aurantiaca + B. subtilis + A. flavus + A. niger) can effectively degrade PET, indicating its potential to eliminate PET in plastic contaminated sites without health or environmental risks.

Modification of Graphite Sheet Anode with Iron (II, III) Oxide-Carbon Dots for Enhancing the Performance of Microbial Fuel Cell

Babita Tripathi et al.

Summary: The present study explores the use of carbon dots coated with iron (II, III) oxide (Fe3O4) as an anode in microbial fuel cells (MFC). Different concentrations of Fe3O4-carbon dots were coated onto graphite sheets, and their performance in MFC was evaluated. The modified anodes showed higher peak currents and fluxes compared to the bare graphite sheet anode, resulting in a significantly improved power density of the MFC. The increased interaction area of carbon dots enhanced the cell attachment capability of the anode, boosting the biocompatibility of Fe3O4@PSA-C.

Microbial fuel cells, a renewable energy technology for bio-electricity generation: A mini-review

KeChrist Obileke et al.

Summary: The study evaluates microbial fuel cells (MFCs) for generating electricity through biochemical reactions. MFCs can achieve high power density and chemical oxygen demand removal by selecting proper microbes, operation mode, suitable materials, and improved design. However, full-scale application is hindered by materials cost and wastewater buffering capacity, with industrial applications still at the demonstration stage. This research provides new perspectives and steps for scale-up by emphasizing microbe selection criteria and activity.
