Precessing and periodic orbits around hairy black holes in Horndeski's Theory

Hou-Yu Lin et al.

Summary: We study the dynamics of neutral timelike particles around a hairy black hole in Horndeski's theory, which has a coupling parameter with the dimension of length. The relativistic periastron precessions of the particles are derived, and a preliminary bound on the hairy black hole is obtained by comparing with the precession of the S2 star observed with GRAVITY. This bound is orders of magnitude tighter than previous constraints based on the shadow size of M87* obtained from EHT observations. Additionally, we analyze the periodic motions of the particles around the hole in the strong gravitational field, revealing that small variations in the coupling parameter can lead to transitions between quasi-periodic orbits, periodic orbits, or unbound orbits. Our findings may provide insights for distinguishing the hairy black hole in Horndeski's theory from classical black holes using the dynamics of particles in strong gravitational fields.

First Sagittarius A* Event Horizon Telescope Results. III. Imaging of the Galactic Center Supermassive Black Hole

Kazunori Akiyama et al.

Summary: This article presents the first event-horizon-scale images and spatiotemporal analysis of Sgr A* taken with the Event Horizon Telescope in April 2017. Different imaging methods and scattering effect corrections were used to reconstruct the static images of Sgr A*. The analysis shows that the Sgr A* image is dominated by a bright ring of emission with a diameter of about 50 microarcseconds, consistent with the expected shadow of a 4 x 10^6 solar mass black hole in the Galactic center at a distance of 8 kiloparsecs.

Schwarzschild-Finsler-Randers spacetime: geodesics, dynamical analysis and deflection angle

E. Kapsabelis et al.

Summary: In this work, the authors extend the study of Schwarzschild-Finsler-Randers (SFR) spacetime, investigating the energy and angular momentum derivation of a particle moving along a geodesic. The study compares the model to general relativity (GR) and examines the effective potential and phase portraits. The derivation of the deflection angle of the SFR spacetime is also explored and compared to GR, revealing small differences.

Probing a Finslerian Schwarzschild black hole with the orbital precession of Sagittarius A

Xin Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the orbits of Finslerian Schwarzschild black hole, revealing the effects of the Finslerian parameter and orbital elements on orbital precession. Observations of star orbits provide a means to constrain the Finslerian parameter, with numerical results showing the influence of motion direction and the magnitude of the parameter on orbital precession.

Quasinormal modes and late-time falloff of Finslerian black holes with cosmological constant

Tian-Yang Li et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the quasinormal modes of scalar and electromagnetic field perturbations in Finslerian Reissner-Nordstr6m black holes with a cosmological constant. The fundamental frequencies and dynamical evolution of quasinormal modes are analyzed using the WKB approximation and finite difference method, respectively. The results show that the oscillation periods of quasinormal modes increase with higher Finslerian parameter epsilon(2). The research also reveals the spectrum splitting in the quasinormal modes of Finslerian black holes. The effects of Finslerian parameter epsilon(2) on the late-time tails of scalar and electromagnetic field perturbations are demonstrated.

Testing the nature of Gauss-Bonnet gravity by four-dimensional rotating black hole shadow

Shao-Wen Wei et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of a novel four-dimensional static and spherically symmetric Gauss-Bonnet black hole provides a promising opportunity to test Gauss-Bonnet gravity through astronomical observations. This study investigates the shadows cast by nonrotating and rotating Gauss-Bonnet black holes, finding that the metric parameter alpha affects the shadow's size and shape, with negative values being preferred. The comparison with the Kerr black hole shows that the shadow is more distorted for positive alpha and less distorted for negative alpha.

Tests of general relativity with binary black holes from the second LIGO-Virgo gravitational-wave transient catalog

R. Abbott et al.

Summary: Gravitational waves are used to test general relativity in strong-field regimes, with evaluations of data consistency showing no evidence for new physics beyond general relativity. Modifying waveform parameters and constraints on Lorentz-violating coefficients have improved past limitations, while analysis of merger remnants and polarization confirms agreement with theoretical predictions.
