Recent advances of polypyrrole conducting polymer film for biomedical application: Toward a viable platform for cell-microbial interactions

Maria H. R. Borges et al.

Summary: Polypyrrole (PPy) is a conductive polymer with electrical conductivity and biological properties, making it suitable for biomedical applications. PPy films exhibit good biocompatibility, enhance cell adhesion and proliferation, and have effective antimicrobial activity. This comprehensive review evaluates the evidence of PPy-based films on metallic implanted devices, focusing on their antimicrobial effect and cell behavior in vitro and in vivo. Incorporating other elements into PPy films, such as antimicrobial agents and biocompatible polymers, may enhance their biological responses.

Modulation of Differentiation of Embryonic Stem Cells by Polypyrrole: The Impact on Neurogenesis

Katerina Skopalova et al.

Summary: Polypyrrole, as a representative of electro-conducting biomaterials, has been found to induce neurogenesis in embryonic bodies formed from embryonic stem cells through modulating signaling pathways. This effect is attributed to low-molecular-weight compounds present in aqueous polypyrrole extracts, leading to the importance of considering stem cell differentiation modulation when using polypyrrole as a biomaterial.

Using a Digital Twin of an Electrical Stimulation Device to Monitor and Control the Electrical Stimulation of Cells in vitro

Julius Zimmermann et al.

Summary: In this study, a digital twin of a basic electrical stimulation device for in vitro cell stimulation was developed. The experimental characterization of electrochemical processes at the electrode surface was integrated into a numerical model to quantify the influence of model uncertainties on relevant observables. Different stimulation protocols were compared and the information contained in the monitored stimulation pulses was related to the stimulation model.

Theoretical analysis of the electrochemical systems used for the application of direct current/voltage stimuli on cell cultures

Simon Guette-Marquet et al.

Summary: Endogenous electric fields play essential roles in functions such as cell proliferation, motion, differentiation, and tissue development, and are often mimicked in vitro using electrochemical systems. Analyzing these systems from an electrochemical standpoint can help harmonize protocols and improve understanding of the data produced. The complexity arising from high cell voltage applied to single electrodes, as well as the potential overestimation of electric field values in macro-sized devices, suggests the need for revisiting this area with lower electric field values.
