Signatures of a strange metal in a bosonic system

Chao Yang et al.

Summary: Fermi liquid theory is the basis for understanding metals, but some quantum materials exhibit strange-metallic behavior that deviates from the traditional theory. This study shows that strange-metal properties also exist in a bosonic system, suggesting the presence of a fundamental principle governing transport beyond particle statistics.

High-Tc Cuprates: a Story of Two Electronic Subsystems

N. Barisic et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the phenomenology and microscopy studies of cuprate superconductors, focusing on the universal conductance features. The study reveals the existence of two electronic subsystems in cuprate materials and provides detailed explanations of the localization and delocalization processes of holes under different doping and temperature conditions. It is found that the delocalized holes exhibit identical Fermi liquid characteristics across the cuprate phase diagram, allowing for a simple calculation of carrier density and comprehensive understanding of key features in the normal and superconducting states.

Stranger than metals

Philip W. Phillips et al.

Summary: Strange metals are a class of materials that defy the traditional temperature dependence of electrical resistivity at both low and high temperatures. By studying the transport and spectroscopic data of these materials, we aim to identify a unifying physical principle, with special focus on quantum criticality, Planckian dissipation, Mottness, and the possible requirement of a new gauge principle to explain the nonlocal transport observed in these materials.

Identification of a characteristic doping for charge order phenomena in Bi-2212 cuprates via RIXS

Haiyu Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interplay between charge order (CO) and superconductivity using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in the Bi-2212 cuprate phase diagram. The results show that as doping increases, the CO wave vector decreases, and the correlation length becomes shorter. CO excitations in the superconducting state are strongest at the critical doping p(c), consistent with behavior at a charge order quantum critical point. Interestingly, p(c) appears to be near optimal doping, where the superconducting transition temperature is maximal.

Pairing properties of the t-t′-t-J model

Shengtao Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the pairing properties of the two-dimensional t-t'-t''-J model at a doping level of x approximately 0.1. Our findings show that strong pairing occurs for electron doping when t' > 0, while pairing is absent for hole doping when t' < 0. This is different from the behavior observed in cuprates, where the highest transition temperatures are found for hole doping. Our results suggest that extended hoppings alone are insufficient to explain the pairing in the hole-doped system.

Origin of metal-insulator transitions in correlated perovskite metals

M. Chandler Bennett et al.

Summary: The mechanisms driving metal-to-insulator transitions in correlated solids involve complex couplings of charge, spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom. This study demonstrates that certain perovskite materials undergo MIT when self-hole-doped, leading to a charge and bond-disproportionated gapped insulating state. The size of the band gap is determined by the degree of hole passivation at specific sites, and controlling the amount of ligand holes is crucial in controlling the MIT.

Strange metal behaviour from charge density fluctuations in cuprates

Goetz Seibold et al.

Summary: A strange metallic state above the pseudogap temperature T-* in cuprates has puzzled scientists for a long time. Recent experiments have identified charge density fluctuations as a possible microscopic mechanism underlying this behavior, shedding light on the mysteries surrounding the strange metal phenomenology.

Ground-state phase diagram of the t-t′-J model

Shengtao Jiang et al.

Summary: The study presents a rough phase diagram on t-t'-J cylinders through large-scale DMRG calculations, approximating a 2D system, showing different t' values corresponding to electron- and hole-doped cuprate systems. The electron-doped region exhibits strong and unambiguous pairing, while the hole-doped region demonstrates suppression of superconductivity and a unique stripe structure.

Revealing the Complex Nature of Bonding in the Binary High-Pressure Compound FeO2

E. Koemets et al.

Summary: Extreme pressures and temperatures can significantly impact the chemistry of iron oxides, resulting in the formation of various compounds. Research has shown that iron in high-pressure cubic FeO2 and isostructural FeO2H0.5 is ferric (Fe3+), with oxygen having a formal valence less than 2. The reduction of oxygen valence from 2 to 1.5 can be explained by the formation of a localized hole at oxygen sites.

Summary: The room-temperature optical constants of crystalline Bi(2)Sr(2)CaCu(2)O(8+delta) were determined using data from Brillouin light scattering spectra. Absence of Luther-Emery superconducting phase in the three-band model for cuprate ladders

Jeong-Pil Song et al.

Summary: Research shows that in the doped 2-leg three-band ladder consisting of both copper and oxygen, there is an absence of the superconducting Luther-Emery phase, with density-density correlations dominant at long range instead of pairing correlations. These results highlight the critical importance of oxygen orbitals and raise questions about the applicability of existing correlated-electron theories of superconductivity.

Hidden strange metallic state in underdoped electron-doped cuprates

Tarapada Sarkar et al.

Summary: Recent transport studies have found that the low-temperature linear-in-T resistivity of strange metals, such as the metallic state of high-temperature cuprate superconductors, still persists over a finite range of overdoping. The observation that the resistivity upturn is eliminated at high magnetic field and the resistivity becomes linear-in-temperature from around 40 K down to 0.7 K suggests that the strange metal is a robust universal feature of the metallic ground state of cuprates, not confined to a single critical point in the phase diagram.
