Copper recovery from unground printed circuit board by biogenic ferric at high solid/liquid ratio

Nieves Iglesias-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the recovery of copper from waste printed circuit boards (PCBs) using biogenic ferric sulfate at a high solid to liquid ratio. PCB parts were packed in a column and biogenic ferric was recirculated. By connecting the PCB column to a flooded packed-bed (FPB) bioreactor, the spent ferric ions were regenerated and the copper dissolution rate was greatly increased. The proposed system is simple, inexpensive, low energy consumption, eco-friendly, and effective for copper recovery from PCBs.

A novel computational simulation approach to study biofilm significance in a packed-bed biooxidation reactor

Mohammad Abbasi et al.

Summary: The study utilized a three-dimensional CFD model to investigate gas-liquid flow in a packed-bed biooxidation reactor, revealing the conversion rate and concentration distribution of Fe (II). The findings indicate that about one-third of Fe (II) conversion occurs in the upper part of the reactor, with lower Fe (II) concentration on the biofilm surface in the lower part.

The BRISA process as a path for efficient copper recovery from waste PCBs

Nieves Iglesias-Gonzalez et al.

Summary: In this study, a two-stage biohydrometallurgical process for copper extraction from waste PCBs was developed. The separation of chemical leaching of copper with ferric iron from the regeneration of the leaching agent by bacterial oxidation of the ferrous iron proved to be an efficient route for copper recovery. Increasing ferric iron concentration was found to enhance leaching rate, leading to 90% copper extraction achieved in 48 hours for large waste PCBs.
