Anti-clogging mechanism of freeze-thaw combined with step vacuum preloading in treating landfill sludge

Yang Xu et al.

Summary: Globally, there is a large accumulation of landfill sludge (LS) that requires urgent reduction and dewatering. A new method called freeze-thaw combined with step vacuum preloading (F/T-SVP) is proposed to address pollution and clogging issues caused by chemical conditioning combined with traditional vacuum preloading (TVP) in treating LS. Experimental study comparing TVP and SVP showed that F/T-SVP effectively improved drainage and consolidation of LS by avoiding clogging and achieving a more compact structure.

Crystallization-driven evolution of water occurrence states with implications on dewaterability improvement of waste-activated sludge

Boran Wu et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve the dewaterability of waste-activated sludge (WAS) by using crystallization to drive the evolution of water occurrence states. The formation of CO2 hydrate in WAS was found to significantly enhance its dewatering performance. Additionally, the dissociation of hydrates could be used to recycle CO2 gas and reduce chemical consumption in the dewatering process. The research also revealed that the crystallization of water led to changes in the water occurrence state, resulting in improved water-solid separation. These findings provide a novel strategy for enhancing the dewatering performance of waste-activated sludge and increasing its environmental friendliness.

Study on effect of equivalent initial water content on dredged sludge treated by VP-FSCM

Xiaoya Bian et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of equivalent initial water content (wei) on dredged sludge treated with the vacuum preloading-flocculation-solidification combined method (VP-FSCM). The study examines the deposition, dehydration, strength characteristics, and after-curing water content (wac) of the sludge at different wei through indoor experiments. The treatment efficacy of VP-FSCM is compared with a curing agent solidified sludge method. The research shows that higher wei leads to increased deposition, dehydration, undrained shear strength, and improved curing results. This study provides insights for the application of the physical consolidation-chemical solidification combined disposal technology and promotes the utilization of sludge resources.

Influence of fines content and degree of saturation on the freezing deformation characteristics of unsaturated soils

Hao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of fines content and initial water content on frost susceptibility and freezing deformation properties of soils were evaluated through one-dimensional freezing deformation tests within a closed system. The study also utilized the pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance (P-NMR) method to investigate the pore water distribution and deformation mechanism of freezing soils. The results showed that soil temperature decrease led to a two-stage freezing of pore water, involving the freezing of capillary (or free) water followed by the conversion of adsorbed water into pore ice. Soil specimens with higher fines content exhibited higher unfrozen water content due to abundant adsorbed water from fine particles. The initial water content significantly affected the soil-freezing characteristic curve, especially when fines content was relatively high. Moreover, the freezing deformation properties of soil within a closed system were influenced by the initial water content, with higher degrees of saturation resulting in frost heave and lower degrees of saturation resulting in frost shrinkage. The study underscored the importance of both freezing of pore water and thinning of adsorbed water in determining frost heave or frost shrinkage of soil, with a critical degree of saturation separating the two properties.
