Evidence for reduced performance discrepancy of improved cookstoves at laboratory and field

Mohd Mubashshir Naved et al.

Summary: The performance of improved cookstoves in laboratory and field settings differs due to controllable and uncontrollable factors. The study shows that traditional cookstoves emit the highest levels of particulate matter and carbon monoxide, while forced-draft cookstoves are the cleanest. In field settings, there is an average increase of 31% in particulate matter and 33% in carbon monoxide, with a 10% decrease in thermal efficiency. The deviations in results are attributed to uncontrollable factors such as kitchen aspect ratio, air exchange rate, and local weather.

Impact assessment of clean cookstove intervention in Gujarat, India: a potential case for corporate social responsibility (CSR) funding

Ankit Gupta et al.

Summary: Exposure to indoor air pollutants from traditional cookstoves in rural Indian households is concerning. The study found that using improved cookstoves can significantly reduce PM2.5 and CO concentrations, with the aid of Information-Education-Communication activities. Further focus on greener fuels and ventilation characteristics is suggested to comply with safe limits.

In-use emissions from biomass and LPG stoves measured during a large, multi-year cookstove intervention study in rural India

Mohammad Maksimul Islam et al.

Summary: A multiyear cookstove intervention trial in rural India included an emission measurement campaign, which found that LPG stoves had the lowest pollutant emissions, but their in-home emissions were significantly higher than lab emissions. The study highlighted the importance of in-home emission measurements for assessing the actual exposure benefits of LPG stoves in real-world interventions.

Health and economic impact of air pollution in the states of India: the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Anamika Pandey et al.

Summary: The study estimated the impact of air pollution on human health and the economy in India. In 2019, air pollution led to 1.67 million deaths and an economic loss of $36.8 billion, accounting for 1.36% of India's GDP. The economic impact varied significantly among states, with low per-capita GDP states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar experiencing the highest losses.
