Highly active and selective H2O2 electrosynthesis in O-rich ZIF-67 derived Co-N/O-C cathode for ofloxacin oxidation

Zunxing Liu et al.

Summary: We evaluated a facile and efficient approach of improving the activity and selectivity of Co-N-C catalysts by introducing O functional groups at different pyrolysis temperatures. H-cell test showed a H2O2 output of 2170 ppm within 6 hours, meeting the in-situ degradation of antibiotics (Ofloxacin) and offering a reliable on-site environmental treatment option.

Comparison of membrane fouling induced by protein, polysaccharide and humic acid under sodium and calcium ionic conditions

Yifan Wang et al.

Summary: The adsorption behavior of sodium alginate, humic acid, and bovine serum albumin on PVDF membranes was investigated using quartz crystal microbalance and dissipation (QCM-D) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) detection. The adhesion force between organics and membrane affected the adsorption rate at the initial fouling stage, while the interaction force among the organic molecules was connected to the degree of irreversible fouling and the structure of the fouling layer. Under the same ionic strength conditions, calcium (Ca2+) enhanced organic fouling compared to sodium (Na+), which is consistent with the XDLVO theory. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) showed higher deposition in mass, adsorption rate, and irreversibility than the other two organics due to stronger interaction forces among BSA molecules and a denser fouling layer. The adsorption process followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic model for sodium alginate (SA) and BSA, while humic acid (HA) conformed to a pseudo-first order kinetic model.

Microbial interaction energy and EPS composition influenced ultrafiltration membrane biofouling and the role of UV pretreatment

Haotian Hu et al.

Summary: Biofouling is an important factor limiting the further application of ultrafiltration, and this study investigated the biofouling and alleviation mechanisms with different microorganisms. The results showed that Pseudomonas putida induced stronger fouling than Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecalis. EPS composition and analysis indicated that polysaccharide played a greater role in biofouling than protein. The interaction energy between microorganisms was higher due to the higher content of polysaccharide and protein in EPS from P. putida, resulting in thicker biofilm and stronger biofouling.
