Assembly and analysis of the Populus deltoides mitochondrial genome: the first report of a multicircular mitochondrial conformation for the genus Populus

Yanshu Qu et al.

Summary: This study reported the mitochondrial genome sequence of Populus deltoides and found multiple circular chromosomes, indicating extensive rearrangements and tRNA transfer from chloroplasts. It also revealed fewer RNA editing sites in the mitogenomes of poplar and other angiosperms compared to gymnosperms.

The complete mitochondrial genome of okra (Abelmoschus esculentus): using nanopore long reads to investigate gene transfer from chloroplast genomes and rearrangements of mitochondrial DNA molecules

Jihan Li et al.

Summary: In this study, we sequenced the plastid and mitochondrial genomes of okra and characterized their structures and interactions. The plastid genome of okra is highly conserved, while the mitochondrial genome exhibits abundant subgenomic configurations. Extensive sequence transfer between the two organelles was observed, with the integration of plastid-derived genes and pseudogenization in the mitochondrial genome. Additionally, RNA editing of protein-coding genes in the organelle genomes was characterized.

Highly active repeat-mediated recombination in the mitogenome of the holoparasitic plant Aeginetia indica

Yan Zhong et al.

Summary: The mitogenomes of most flowering plants evolve slowly in sequence but rapidly in structure due to repeat-mediated recombination. This study focuses on the mitogenome of the parasitic plant Aeginetia indica and reveals unique rearrangements in its structure and highly active recombination mediated by repeats. These findings may contribute to the understanding of the impact of parasitic lifestyle on the evolution of mitogenomes.
