The effects of inter-annual fluctuations in precipitation, lake surface area, and wind speed on phytoplankton structure in three shallow Mediterranean lakes (Sakarya, Turkey)

Tugba Ongun Sevindik et al.

Summary: The evaluation of phytoplankton biomass, diversity, functional groups, and environmental parameters in three shallow lakes showed the effects of inter-annual fluctuations in precipitation, lake surface area, and wind speed on the community structure and distribution of phytoplankton. Period B exhibited higher precipitation, wind speed, total phosphorus values, leading to an increase in biomass and species richness. The increase in species diversity values in Period B was related to unstable environmental conditions and their relationship with various environmental factors.

Limno-ecological assessment of lentic ecosystems in the western Mediterranean basin (Turkey) using phytoplankton indices

Abuzer Celekli et al.

Summary: This study assessed the ecological conditions of lentic ecosystems in the western Mediterranean basin, demonstrating significant effects of different stressors on phytoplankton distribution. The Phytoplankton Trophic Index (PTI) was found to be a useful metric for evaluating the ecological status of these ecosystems, with some lakes and reservoirs classified as Good or Moderate conditions based on phytoplankton metrics.

Development of the Diatom Ecological Quality Index (DEQI) for peri-urban mountain streams in the Basin of Mexico

Victor Hugo Salinas-Camarillo et al.

Summary: By studying epilithic diatom response to regional environmental gradients in the Basin of Mexico, a new index called DEQI was proposed as a biological metric to complement ecological quality evaluation of peri-urban streams, indicating five different ecological quality classes based on indicators of high and low ecological quality, and tolerant species.

Bioassessment of water quality of surface waters using diatom metrics

Abuzer Celekli et al.

Summary: Bioassessment of surface waters, especially using diatom metrics, is essential for predicting ecosystem deterioration and achieving environmental sustainability. Multivariate statistical approaches are necessary to analyze the complex response of diatom communities and evaluate ecosystem quality. The biological condition gradient is suggested as a useful approach for developing trophic criteria based on nutrient concentrations and biological indicators.
