Tungsten Phosphide Microsheets In-Situ Grown on Carbon Fiber as Counter Electrode Catalyst for Efficient Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Mian Gao et al.

Summary: The development of low-cost, green, and pollution-free counter electrode materials with high catalytic activity is crucial for improving the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Transition metal phosphides, such as tungsten phosphide (WP), have been widely used in DSSCs due to their excellent catalytic activity and stability. In this study, a novel binary phosphide, WP, is immobilized on carbon paper (CP) using a two-step strategy, resulting in a uniform dispersion of WP on CP. The WP/CP counter electrode exhibits high electrical conductivity and excellent catalytic ability for reducing triiodide, leading to a DSSC with a high-power conversion efficiency of 10.29%, which is superior to that of the Pt-based (7.34%). These findings highlight the potential of WP microsheets grown on carbon paper as an economical and efficient alternative to Pt-based counter electrodes for DSSCs.

The formation of O vacancy on ZrO2/Pd and its effect on methane dry reforming: Insights from DFT and microkinetic modeling

Xue-Rong Shi et al.

Summary: This study reveals the role of oxygen defects in ZrO2/Pd catalyst in the dry reforming of CH4 (DRM) reaction. The reduction of perfect ZrO2 into Zr is not feasible, but the complete reduction of hydroxylated zirconia into Zr is thermodynamically possible under ultrahigh vacuum conditions. The formation of oxygen vacancies at the hydroxylated phase boundary of ZrO2/Pd is both kinetically and thermodynamically feasible. The presence of oxygen vacancies and metal-oxide phase boundary significantly improves the DRM activity.

CoP@Ni2P microcrystals in situ grown on carbon fiber as counter electrode catalysts for high-efficiency dye-sensitized solar cells

Y. Du et al.

Summary: Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have emerged as outstanding materials for energy conversion and storage due to their highly active surface sites, electrical conductivity, and thermal and structural stability. However, their application as the counter electrode (CE) in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is rarely reported. In this study, cobalt phosphide and nickel phosphide (CoP@Ni2P) microcrystals were successfully prepared on carbon fiber of carbon paper (CP) and used as the CE in DSSCs. The CoP@Ni2P@CP CE demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic and photoelectric conversion performance along with the desired stability, making it an efficient platinum-free alternative for DSSCs.
