Assessment of future wind resources under climate change using a multi-model and multi-method ensemble approach

J. Y. He et al.

Summary: This study proposes a multi-model and multi-method ensemble wind resource projection approach for evaluating fine-scale wind energy potential under climate variability. The results indicate a significant increase in future wind resources during summer and a remarkable decline during autumn in Hong Kong.

Mode interpretation of blade number effects on wake dynamics of small-scale horizontal axis wind turbine

Jiahao Wen et al.

Summary: The blade number of a wind turbine significantly affects its near-wake dynamics. Increasing the blade number leads to an early formation of a single peak velocity distribution in the wake, affects the width and velocity deficit of the wake, and influences the recovery of the wake, energy extraction, and fatigue loads of downstream turbines.

J. Y. He et al.

Summary: This paper presents an observational study of wind and turbulence structure of two Super Typhoons using the Shenzhen Meteorological Gradient Tower. The study analyzes the characteristics of wind and turbulence, including mean wind speed profiles, momentum flux, drag coefficient, wind spectra, wind speed variances, turbulent kinetic energy, and TKE budget. The results enhance the understanding of TC boundary layer over land and provide useful information for civil structures and infrastructures design, numerical simulation of landfalling TCs, and TC hazard prevention in coastal regions.

Climate change impacts on wind energy resources in North America based on the CMIP6 projections

A. Martinez et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mid-and long-term evolution of wind energy resources in North America using a multi model ensemble selected from 18 global climate models. It predicts a decrease in onshore wind power density in the US and Canada under different emissions scenarios, while also indicating potential increases in certain regions. The analysis emphasizes the importance of these changes in wind power density for the Levelised Cost of Energy, future investments planning, and the energy mix as a whole.

The present and future offshore wind resource in the Southwestern African region

Daniela C. A. Lima et al.

Summary: The offshore wind resources in the Southwestern African region are projected to change in the future climate conditions. Under the weaker climate mitigation scenario, an increase in offshore wind resources is expected along Namibia and South African western coasts, while a decrease is projected along Angola's coasts. Smaller but similar changes are projected under the stronger climate mitigation scenario.

The role of the power law exponent in wind energy assessment: A global analysis

Christopher Jung et al.

Summary: This study aimed to quantify the error in wind potential assessments resulting from applying the mean of the power law exponent or a value of 0.14. It was found that using the mean of the power law exponent may lead to minor errors in capacity factor estimation in many regions where the wind resource is abundant.

Reduced gust factor for extreme tropical cyclone winds over ocean

J. Y. He et al.

Summary: This study examines the variation of gust factor with wind speed based on data collected from an anemometer during Super Typhoon Hato. It was observed that the gust factor initially increased with increasing wind speed, plateaued at a certain wind speed range, and then exhibited a decreasing trend at very high wind speeds over the ocean, which has significant implications for tropical cyclone studies and engineering applications.

Wind energy resource over Europe under CMIP6 future climate projections: What changes from CMIP5 to CMIP6

D. Carvalho et al.

Summary: The future European wind resource is projected to decrease in most areas according to the latest climate scenarios of CMIP6. Only a few localized areas in eastern Ukraine and Turkey may see an increase. There is significant uncertainty in changes in wind resource variability, with some areas projected to have an increase. Unlike CMIP5, CMIP6 forecasts show a stronger decline in wind resource for practically all of Europe by the end of the century, especially in some areas like northern Norway, Poland, and western Ukraine.

Summary: The study examined the evolution of wind energy resources under different climate change scenarios in Europe, predicting significant reductions in wind power density in Northern Continental Europe and the Central Mediterranean, while an increase is projected in West Finland. The overall trend in other regions depends on the SSP scenario, with considerable growth in Central Europe in the intermediate emissions scenario but some reduction in the highest emissions scenario.
