Characterizations of konjac glucomannan/curdlan edible coatings and the preservation effect on cherry tomatoes

Kai Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, composite coatings (KC) were fabricated using konjac glucomannan (KGM) and curdlan. The rheological properties of the coating solutions were investigated, and the coatings were characterized by various methods. Results showed that the addition of curdlan improved the properties of KGM coatings. The KGM-curdlan composites exhibited good compatibility and uniformity, and the K3C2 coating showed the best performance. The application of K3C2 coating effectively reduced weight loss, decay, and delays in the deterioration of cherry tomatoes.

Self-organization of ferroelectric domains induced by water and reinforced via ultrasonic vibration

Shuo Yan et al.

Summary: Pattern formation caused by self-organization is a fascinating phenomenon that appears in biological, chemical, and physical systems. In this study, the self-organized formation process of ferroelectric domains in 0.72Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O-3-0.28PbTiO(3) bulk crystals exposed to water is observed and reinforced by ultrasonic vibration. The adsorbed surface ions promote domain coarsening, while interactions among dipoles determine the ordering of the domain configuration, and ultrasonic vibration reduces the barrier height for polarization switching. This work demonstrates the self-organization of ferroelectric domains induced by water, which is valuable for understanding domain dynamics and developing high-performance ferroelectric materials.

Fast-growing cyanobacteria bio-embedded into bacterial cellulose for toxic metal bioremediation

Jianxun Xiao et al.

Summary: Cyanobacterial biomass and cellulose-based materials have been used separately as green bio-adsorbents for the removal of toxic metals from water. In this study, the researchers successfully embedded the fast-growing cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus UTEX 2973 into bacterial cellulose, resulting in a living material with excellent water holding capacity. Different types of materials with varying cyanobacteria loads were developed, and the BC/SE spheroids exhibited excellent adsorption properties for toxic copper removal. This simple bio-embedding approach shows promise in the development of living materials for environmental applications.
