How ageing shapes the relationship between working time and carbon dioxide emissions: Evidence from Chinese households

Junjie Zhang et al.

Summary: Working time and ageing have significant impacts on the transition to a low-carbon society, and their interaction plays a crucial role in carbon dioxide emissions. This study finds that reducing working time can effectively reduce household indirect emissions, but ageing reshapes the relationship between working time and emissions by influencing time allocation and consumption patterns. The findings suggest that work time reduction policies should consider the level of elderly occupants and household income.

The impacts of household structure transitions on household carbon emissions in China

Yimeng Zhang et al.

Summary: Household consumption has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions and contribute to carbon peaking and neutrality goals. However, the shrinking household size in China has a significant impact on both direct and indirect carbon emissions. This study used models to investigate these impacts and found that reducing household size leads to increased carbon emissions per capita, with a greater effect on indirect emissions. Projections for 2030 suggest a potential increase in household carbon emissions compared to 2012, due to changes in population and household size.

Exploring the drivers and influencing mechanisms of urban household electricity consumption in China-Based on longitudinal data at the provincial level

Yuanping Wang et al.

Summary: This study used the extended STIRPAT model to explore the impacts and mechanisms of urban household electricity consumption (UHEC) in China. It found that factors such as floor area, urbanization rate, proportion of older people, per capita income, and unit energy consumption significantly contribute to UHEC. The study also identified the direct and mediating effects between these factors and UHEC, with floor area having a direct effect of 13.5% and GDP per capita and urbanization rate having strong mediating roles of 47.8% and 28.1%, respectively.

Work-from-home is here to stay: Call for flexibility in post-pandemic work policies

Darja Smite et al.

Summary: In early 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic led to a sudden shift from office to remote work for tech company employees worldwide. Based on internal surveys and post-pandemic work policies from multiple companies, this article examines the new trend of remote working. The findings demonstrate that companies are providing more flexibility in terms of working time and location for employees, although the extent of this flexibility varies among companies. Additionally, there has been a change in the psychological contract between employees and managers regarding remote work.

Inequality in urban household energy consumption for 30 Chinese provinces

Mingming Zhang et al.

Summary: Reducing inequality in energy consumption is crucial for sustainable development and climate goals. A study in China measured urban household energy consumption across different income groups and found that there was a decreasing trend of energy consumption from the eastern coast to the western interior, while per capita energy consumption showed an increasing trend from the southeastern coast to the northwestern interior. High-income groups accounted for a significant portion of the country's energy consumption, while low-income groups accounted for a very small proportion. Inequality in energy consumption between provinces increased over time, but inequality within provinces decreased.

Assessment of space heating consumption efficiency based on a household survey in the hot summer and cold winter climate zone in China

Xia Wang et al.

Summary: Space heating demand in the HSCW climate zone in China has rapidly increased, posing challenges for electricity supply and building decarbonization. This study examines the energy efficiency of household space heating and identifies opportunities to reduce electricity usage. Using a stochastic frontier analysis, the average household space heating efficiency was found to be 0.69. This indicates the potential for households to reduce heating electricity consumption by 31% without sacrificing thermal comfort, with building energy efficiency standards being a key factor.

Impact of population ageing on carbon emissions: A case of China's urban households

Yan-Yan Yu et al.

Summary: Ageing has a significant impact on carbon emissions by influencing the production and consumption of the economic system. This study analyzes the effects of ageing on urban residents' carbon emissions in China from 2002 to 2012 and explores the regional differences and temporal uncertainty of this impact. Older adults in China contributed less to the growth of direct and indirect carbon emissions due to their decreased per capita energy consumption and minimum increase in consumption compared to other age groups. The study also highlights the regional heterogeneity in the impact of ageing on carbon emissions.

Historical peak situation of building carbon emissions in different climate regions in China: Causes of differences and peak challenges

Rui Li et al.

Summary: The climatic conditions in different regions of China have led to significant differences in the historical peak situation of building carbon emissions (BCE). This study evaluates the historical peak situation of BCE in different climate regions in China and discusses the reasons for the differences in growth trends and peak situations. Challenges faced by each region in promoting the peaking of BCE are highlighted. The research results show that the growth rates of BCE in the transitional and southern regions are significantly lower than the growth rate of building energy consumption, and the carbon emissions per unit floor area in the southern region has reached its peak. The main obstacles in the northern heating region are the high-carbon heating energy structure and the heating behavior of residents, while challenges in the transitional and southern regions include population migration and increasing requirements for living environment comfort.

Temporal dynamics and spatial differences of household carbon emissions per capita of China's provinces during 2000-2019

Ce Song et al.

Summary: This paper examines the characteristics of household carbon emissions per capita (HCPC) in China and analyzes the decoupling relationship between household consumption and related emissions. The results show that HCPC has increased significantly in all provinces, with energy consumption being the main driver. The spatial differences in HCPC have also narrowed during the study period. The paper suggests adopting more effective measures, such as improving energy efficiency and developing clean energy, in provinces with higher carbon emission growth.

Analysing the drivers of the efficiency of households in electricity consumption

Desiderio Romero-Jordan et al.

Summary: Households play a significant role in energy demand, specifically in electricity demand. This study uses statistical matching techniques with data from the Spanish Household Budget Survey to analyze the level and drivers of electricity consumption efficiency in households. The findings show that electricity efficiency is already relatively high across all income levels, with the lowest income households being the most efficient. The number of rooms in a dwelling and household size and educational level are key drivers of household electricity efficiency. The study suggests that price-based measures should be complemented with policies encouraging efficiency and targeted support for low-income households to mitigate the distributional impact of price increases.

Does living alone increase the consumption of social resources?

Houyin Long et al.

Summary: As China's economy grows, more and more people choose to live alone, which has significant implications for resources consumption and the ecological environment. This study finds that individuals living alone consume more resources and generate more waste, with household waste being affected the most, followed by household electricity consumption and household water consumption. Age is positively related to resources consumption and waste generation, while energy-saving technologies in household appliances contribute to resource conservation and emission reduction.
