Different Interventions for COVID-19 Primary and Booster Vaccination? Effects of Psychological Factors and Health Policies on Vaccine Uptake

Philipp Sprengholz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the predictors of primary and booster vaccination as well as the potential effects of policies combining vaccination mandates and monetary incentives using experimental data collected in Germany. The results showed that individuals who received primary vaccination were less complacent, had a better understanding of collective protection, and were less likely to believe in conspiracy-based misinformation compared to unvaccinated individuals. Boosted individuals exhibited even lower complacency, fewer conspiracy-based beliefs, fewer constraints on prioritizing vaccination, and a higher likelihood of compliance with official recommendations. Support and reactance towards vaccination mandates depended on vaccination status rather than policy characteristics, and higher incentives had a considerable positive effect on booster willingness among vaccinated individuals. The study suggests that while mandates may be necessary for primary vaccination, financial incentives could be an alternative to encourage booster uptake, and combining both measures for the same target group may not be advisable in most cases.

Psychological reactance and vaccine uptake: a longitudinal study

Iris A. M. Verpaalen et al.

Summary: This pre-registered longitudinal study aimed to investigate the changes in state reactance during a COVID-19 vaccination program and its relationship with vaccine uptake. The study found that reactance remained stable over time and predicted lower subsequent vaccination intention. However, controlling for intentions, reactance did not predict vaccine uptake. Overall, reactance has a sustained role in the anticipation of a vaccination decision but does not determine the final choice.

Psychological profiles of anti-vaccination argument endorsement

Dawn L. Holford et al.

Summary: The proliferation of anti-vaccination arguments online poses a threat to immunization programs. Communicators need to understand the motivations behind these views and consider psychological attributes that lead to vaccine hesitancy. Results from a study in the UK showed that endorsement of anti-vaccination arguments is related to anti-scientific beliefs and partisan ideologies, with individual differences in attitude balance. Communicators should be aware of these differences to effectively address vaccine hesitancy.

Summary: The study found that reactance caused by mandates can have detrimental effects, such as reducing the intention to vaccinate against influenza and adhere to COVID-19 related protective measures.

The association between vaccination status identification and societal polarization

Luca Henkel et al.

Summary: The study shows that people's identification with their COVID-19 vaccination status is associated with polarization in attitudes, behaviours, and acceptance of vaccination policies. This identification plays a key role in shaping intergroup conflict and predicting behavioral responses to vaccination policies.

Does social influence affect COVID-19 vaccination intention among the unvaccinated?

Gul Deniz Salali et al.

Summary: Conformist social influence has both positive and negative effects on vaccine promotion. Research reveals that it is not a determining factor for vaccination intention, but psychological reactance and collectivism are. Therefore, diverse promotion strategies should be implemented to address the heterogeneity of individual attitudes.

Freedom-prompting reactance mitigation strategies function differently across levels of trait reactance

Adam S. Richards et al.

Summary: The study found that recipients' level of reactance proneness can affect the effectiveness of reactance mitigation strategies. For individuals high in trait reactance, inoculation can indirectly increase intention towards health behaviors. Therefore, it is important to tailor message strategies based on different levels of reactance proneness in the audience.

Rather than inducing psychological reactance, requiring vaccination strengthens intentions to vaccinate in US populations

Dolores Albarracin et al.

Summary: The results of the study indicate that vaccine requirements can strengthen vaccination intentions compared to encouraging free choice, without triggering psychological reactance, thus positively impacting the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines.
