Efficient stochastic analysis of unsaturated slopes subjected to various rainfall intensities and patterns

Xin Gu et al.

Summary: This study proposes an extreme gradient boosting-based stochastic analysis framework to estimate the rainfall-induced slope failure probability. The spatial variability of soil properties, rainfall intensity, and rainfall pattern were found to have significant effects on the failure probability. The proposed framework can accurately and efficiently compute the failure probability and provide guidance for landslide emergency management departments.

A comprehensive approach for bridge performance evaluation under rockfall impact integrated with geological hazard analysis

Jingfeng Zhang et al.

Summary: Rockfall is a major hazard for bridges in mountainous areas. Currently, subjective and deterministic methods are used to evaluate the structural responses. This study employs Monte Carlo simulations to obtain the probability distributions of rockfall collision parameters, which are then used as input parameters in the dynamic simulation of bridges. Three-dimensional nonlinear dynamic analysis is used to evaluate the safety of the bridge structures under rockfall hazards.

Summary: This study investigated the fragmentation characteristics of rocks under impact through experimental and simulation methods, and proposed a theoretical model to evaluate the breakage of rock blocks under impact. These findings are of great significance for guiding rock breakage in mines and rockfall hazard protection.

Experimental study on impact force due to collision of rockfall and sliding soil mass caused by seismic slope failure

Susumu Nakajima et al.

Summary: A series of experiments were conducted to understand the impact force mobilization characteristics, considering factors such as weight, size, shape, stiffness, material, and movement type of the collision object. The results showed that the relationship between the maximum impact force and momentum varied depending on the characteristics of the collision object. Despite varying test conditions, a single linear equation was able to express the relationship between force product and momentum of the impact load. The knowledge obtained from reduced scale tests was extended to prototype scale, and an energy-based design approach was proposed to rationalize the design of protection walls for rockfall and sliding soil mass.

Impact of rock block characteristics on rockfall hazard and its implications for rockfall protection strategies along Himalayan highways: a case study

Ashok K. Singh et al.

Summary: This study highlights the impact of rock block characteristics on rockfall hazard and the design of mitigative measures. It emphasizes the significance of block initiation zones in determining various factors such as bounce height, kinetic energy, run-out distance, and impact down the slope. The study suggests that considering the kinetic energies of specific block size range along with initiation zones can enhance the effectiveness of rockfall protection measures.

Influence of particle size on the buffering efficiency of soil cushion layer against rockfall impact

Weigang Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of particle size on the buffering efficiency of a soil cushion layer through experimental and numerical tests. It is found that particle size can significantly affect the impact force, especially in high-velocity impacts. These findings offer insights for designing effective soil cushion layers for protection structures.

Experimental study on the coefficient of restitution for the rotational sphere rockfall

Jianhui Tang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the energy dissipation of rockfall collision on a slope surface and designed experimental equipment to simulate the motion and collision process of rockfall. The results showed that the sandy soil thickness of the slope significantly affects the COR of rotational rockfall. Additionally, there is a clear correlation between the COR and impact angle.
