Life Cycle Prediction Assessment of Battery Electrical Vehicles with Special Focus on Different Lithium-Ion Power Batteries in China

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study conducts a life cycle assessment of four different power batteries for battery electric vehicles (BEV) in China. The results show that different power batteries have different environmental impacts, with the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery being more environmentally friendly in global warming potential and acidification potential, and the lithium-ion nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) battery being more environmentally friendly in abiotic depletion and human toxicity potential. However, the lithium titanate oxide (LTO) battery has the highest environmental impact due to its lower energy density. Overall, with improvements in battery density, charge efficiency, electricity structure, and vehicle lightweight level, BEVs based on these batteries show substantial environmental benefits.

Investigating greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impacts from the production of lithium-ion batteries in China

Xin Lai et al.

Summary: This study investigates eleven ecological metrics of six typical types of LIBs using the life cycle assessment method based on local data in China, and evaluates the ecological impacts and carbon neutralization potential of battery production. The results show that the ecological indexes of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries are better than ternary batteries, prioritizing LFP batteries can reduce environmental damage. Furthermore, the study predicts a reduction in GHG emissions from battery production in China by at least 30% and 90% in 2030 and 2060, respectively, compared to 2020, indicating the importance of green energy in achieving carbon neutralization in battery production.

Investigating carbon footprint and carbon reduction potential using a cradle-to-cradle LCA approach on lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles in China

Quanwei Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the carbon footprint of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) produced in China using a cradle-to-cradle life-cycle assessment approach. The results show that battery production and use are the main sources of carbon emissions, with hydrometallurgy being the method with the lowest carbon emission for recycling. Battery remanufacturing through recycled materials can significantly reduce carbon emissions. The future electricity mix will greatly impact the carbon emissions of battery production. Short-term carbon reduction measures include battery recycling, while the long-term measure is greening the electricity sector.

Summary: Circular economy strategies are important for reducing the environmental impacts and improving efficiency of electric vehicles. However, there is a lack of sufficient research on these strategies in the field of life-cycle assessment, resulting in variability in research outcomes. Battery recycling is the most discussed topic, while other strategies, such as upgrading or remanufacturing, have received less attention. The environmental impacts of batteries vary based on factors such as battery chemistry, impact assessment method, available inventories, and CE scenarios.

Shiwei Du et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of different allocation methods on the environmental performance assessment of power lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) during production and recycling processes. It finds that the choice of allocation method significantly affects the results and suggests a need to revisit previous studies comparing battery types. Qualitative analysis based on product and process characteristics is conducted to compare the applicability of allocation methods to LIB recycling. The study recommends considering the characteristics of different methods and recommending specific allocation methods for standardized assessments in the LCA community.

The environmental footprint of electric vehicle battery packs during the production and use phases with different functional units

Haohui Wu et al.

Summary: Battery electric vehicles' driving performances depend on lithium-ion batteries. Research has focused on battery packs' environmental burden throughout the production and use phases, using a synthetic index to evaluate their sustainability. Life cycle assessment reveals global warming potential, water consumption, and ecological impact. Different indicators are used to compare nickel-cobalt-manganese and lithium-iron phosphate battery packs' environmental friendliness, with factors like cathodes and battery management systems being key contributors to environmental performance. Developing renewable energy sources and using green materials can reduce the environmental burden of battery packs.

Summary: The use of electric vehicles aims to reduce carbon emissions and environmental pollution caused by transportation. However, the production and application of electric vehicle batteries also contribute to environmental pollution. Research shows that LiFePO4 batteries are more environmentally friendly in the production phase, while Li(NiCoMn)O-2 batteries are more eco-friendly in the application and transportation phases. Despite this, LiFePO4 batteries are generally more environmentally friendly than Li(NiCoMn)O-2 batteries over their entire life cycle.
