Analysis of illicit stimulant use triangulating wastewater, general population survey and web survey data

Karoliina Karjalainen et al.

Summary: This study analysed illicit stimulant use in Finland by comparing multiple datasets. The results showed an increase in stimulant use between 2014 and 2018, with disadvantaged socio-demographic background and other substance use being associated with past-year stimulant use. The study also found differences between frequent and occasional users of amphetamine. The findings emphasize the importance of prevention and harm reduction strategies.

Illicit drug use in Reykjavik by wastewater-based epidemiology

Arndis Sue Ching Love et al.

Summary: Estimating illicit drug use on a community level through wastewater samples using wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a reliable method for obtaining near real-time results. The study in Reykjavik from 2017 to 2020 found an increase in amphetamine and methamphetamine use, with amphetamine being the dominant stimulant and stable MDMA use. There was a significant decrease in cocaine use and an increase in cannabis use during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The results by WBE aligned with other indicators such as seizure data and driving under the influence cases, successfully estimating temporal and spatial trends in illicit drug use.

How the recreational stimulant market has changed: Case study in Adelaide, Australia 2016-2019

Summary: The consumption of stimulant drugs increases during festive periods, with MDMA, MDA, and cocaine showing significant increases during the Christmas-New Year period. Methamphetamine and new psychoactive substances (NPS) exhibit variable trends, suggesting that drug use during holiday periods can be predicted from patterns of use during non-holiday periods.

Summary: The study found that deaths related to 3,4 methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) increased in Australia, Finland, Portugal, and Turkey between 2011 and 2017. Findings show that MDMA toxicity alone can be fatal, but multiple drug toxicity remains more prevalent.
