Photodissociation of small group-14 atomic clusters in a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer

Paul Fischer et al.

Summary: Cationic and anionic clusters of carbon, silicon, germanium, tin, and lead from group-14 elements were generated and studied using a multi-reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer after high-vacuum laser ablation. In-trap photodissociation experiments were conducted for clusters with sizes ranging from n = 2-10. The production rates and dissociation pathways of the clusters were utilized to investigate the nonmetal-metal transition across the group. Carbon clusters exhibited break-off of neutral trimers, while clusters of the other elements evaporated neutral monomers and, in some cases, formed charged fragments of specific sizes.

Soot inception: Carbonaceous nanoparticle formation in flames

Jacob W. Martin et al.

Summary: This review discusses the formation of carbonaceous nanoparticles from gas-phase molecules in hydrocarbon flames, highlighting both their useful applications and negative impacts as pollutants. Advances in experimental techniques have allowed for the direct observation of gas phase precursors and the transformation into nanoparticles over the past decade. Questions remain regarding the mechanisms leading to nanoparticle formation, with physically stabilised soot inception proposed as a potential middle ground combining physical and chemical routes.

Electronic Spectroscopy of Monocyclic Carbon Ring Cations for Astrochemical Consideration

Johanna Rademacher et al.

Summary: Gas phase electronic spectra of pure carbon cations, generated by laser vaporization of graphite and cooled to low temperatures, are measured and tagged with helium atoms. The measured spectra show that these cations are monocyclic ring structures and their characteristics are linearly related to the number of carbon atoms. This research provides important constraints for astronomical searches of these ions in diffuse clouds using absorption spectroscopy.

DECAY DYNAMICS IN MOLECULAR BEAMS

Klavs Hansen

Summary: The paper reviews the power law decays in molecular beams and analyzes the transition from canonical to microcanonical description of the decay. It also discusses deviations from power law and their implications, as well as corrections to the power law due to finite heat capacities and nonideal energy distributions, and the consequences for interpreting action spectroscopy data.

Electronic spectra of positively charged carbon clusters-C2n+ (n=6-14)

Jack T. Buntine et al.

Summary: Electronic spectra of C-2n(+) (n = 6-14) clusters reveal predominance of monocyclic structures and increasing prevalence of bicyclic structures with higher carbon atom numbers. Variations in band widths across clusters suggest differences in non-radiative decay rates, with some clusters exhibiting rapid decay while others show slower deactivation.

Vibrational angular momentum level densities of linear molecules

Klavs Hansen et al.

Summary: A recurrence relation is established in this study for calculating the vibrational level densities of linear molecules, specified with respect to both energy and angular momentum. The relation is applied to carbon clusters of sizes (n = 4, 6, 7) as a case study, showing that vibrational excitations can induce angular momentum along the molecular axis.
