Making sense of multivariate community responses in global change experiments

Meghan L. Avolio et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of global change treatments on ecological communities by integrating dissimilarity metrics and rank abundance curves. The findings show that when there is no difference in community composition, there are rarely differences in species ranks or species identities, but more often differences in richness or evenness alone. However, when there are differences between community compositions, it is often associated with differences in ranks either alone or together with richness, evenness, or species identities.

Lakes in the era of global change: moving beyond single-lake thinking in maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services

Jani Heino et al.

Summary: Lakes are crucial for maintaining ecological balance and providing ecosystem services, but face challenges like invasion by non-native species and accumulation of harmful substances in the Anthropocene. Interdisciplinary research and integration of models are essential for the restoration and management of lake biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Habitat restoration in spatially explicit metacommunity models

Klementyna A. Gawecka et al.

Summary: This study aims to advance the understanding of habitat restoration on metacommunities. Findings suggest that restoration efficiency and success certainty are affected by randomly selecting or clustering restored sites. The community structure and types of interactions determine the most efficient restoration approach.

Rapid and low-cost insect detection for analysing species trapped on yellow sticky traps

Elias Boeckmann et al.

Summary: In this study, differentiation of two whitefly species and their natural enemies on yellow sticky traps (YSTs) was successfully achieved using image processing techniques. Different scenarios were tested to enhance model performance, with the best differentiation rate of over 85% for natural enemies and whiteflies being reached when fresh and aged catches were pooled into one category for model training.

Dispersal limitation by structures is more important than intermittent drying effects for metacommunity dynamics in a highly fragmented river network

Mailys Gauthier et al.

Summary: In the Anthropocene, river networks globally face threats from human activities, with permanent and temporary fragmentation affecting aquatic biodiversity. The study shows that metacommunity dynamics in rivers are primarily shaped by permanent fragmentation, with dispersal processes varying over time in response to wet-dry cycles in dynamic river networks. The findings emphasize the importance of considering key hydrological phases and context dependency in conservation strategies for river-network ecosystems.
