Recent Advances and Prospects of Optical Metasurfaces

Shifei Zhang et al.

Summary: As an artificial planar composite medium, optical metasurfaces enable controllable transmission and manipulation of light at the subwavelength scale. They are intensively used in optical technology, providing indispensable support for proof-of-concept and mass production. With the assistance of advanced technologies, optical metasurfaces have been developed for various applications, demonstrating their compactness, versatility, and compatibility. In this Perspective, recent advances are summarized, and the challenges and prospects of optical metasurfaces are discussed.

Observation of strong backscattering in valley-Hall photonic topological interface modes

Christian Anker Rosiek et al.

Summary: This study investigates the practical value of topological protection in reciprocal photonics. Measurements of propagation losses in valley-Hall topological waveguides in the slow-light regime show no evidence of topological protection against backscattering on structural defects. Light's unique properties support the development of photonic quantum technologies, optical interconnects, and novel sensors, but losses due to absorption or backscattering are a key limitation.

Reciprocal topological photonic crystals allow backscattering

Mikael C. Rechtsman

Summary: Topological photonics offers the potential for new devices with reduced backscattering, resulting in lower loss, higher nonlinearity, and smaller size. Recent research has shown that in reciprocal photonic crystals, backscattering cannot be avoided, highlighting the importance of breaking reciprocity for the development of photonic Chern insulators.

Topological-cavity surface-emitting laser

Lechen Yang et al.

Summary: Output power and beam quality are the main limitations for semiconductor lasers. The use of Dirac-vortex topological cavity overcomes the difficulty of single-mode selection and achieves excellent performance. These lasers can be used at important wavelengths for communication and safety, and also have the capability for multiple wavelengths, making them highly versatile.

Higher-order valley vortices enabled by synchronized rotation in a photonic crystal

Rui Zhou et al.

Summary: The synchronized rotation of unit cells in a periodic structure provides a new design perspective for manipulating band topology. In this study, a two-dimensional version of a higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) is designed in a triangular photonic lattice with C-3 symmetry using such rotation. The HOTI supports zero-dimensional corner states and one-dimensional edge states simultaneously, and the photonic corner states carry chiral orbital angular momenta locked by valleys.

Chiral Quasi-Bound States in the Continuum

Adam Overvig et al.

Summary: The study introduces quasi-bound states in the continuum (QBICs) born of chiral perturbations, encoding arbitrary elliptical polarization states and enabling geometric phase engineering. Metasurfaces with ultrasharp spectral features are designed as a result, shaping impinging wave fronts with near-unity efficiency. The findings extend Fano resonances beyond their conventional limits, opening opportunities for nanophotonics, classical and quantum optics, and acoustics.

Nonlinear Imaging of Nanoscale Topological Corner States

Sergey S. Kruk et al.

Summary: Topological states of light localized at the boundaries of finite-size optical structures, originating from bulk properties, exhibit insensitivity to perturbations and enhance the robustness of photonic circuitries. The higher-order bulk-boundary correspondence relating higher-dimensional bulk states to lower-dimensional boundary states is of interest for miniaturization to the nanoscale. Nanoscale topological corner states in metasurfaces allow for enhanced light-matter interactions, potentially facilitating the miniaturization and integration of classical and quantum photonic devices on-chip.

Topological edge states of Kekule-type photonic crystals induced by a synchronized rotation of unit cells

Rui Zhou et al.

Summary: The letter proposes a two-dimensional photonic crystal made of a Kekule lattice of pure dielectrics, where the internal rotation of cylindrical pillars induces optical Dirac-degeneracy breaking. The calculated dispersion shows that synchronized rotation reverses bands and switches parity, inducing a topological phase transition. Simulation demonstrates that topologically protected edge states can achieve robust transmission in defect waveguides under deformation, providing a pragmatically tunable scheme to achieve reconfigurable topological phases.
