Adsorption mechanism of quaternary ammonium corrosion inhibitor on carbon steel surface using ToF-SIMS and XPS

Luntao Wang et al.

Summary: ToF-SIMS and XPS techniques were used to investigate the adsorption behavior of BDA-C14 corrosion inhibitor on the carbon steel surface. The inhibitor formed a protective layer with N-containing polar head group interacting with the surface. The coverage of adsorbed inhibitor varied with immersion time and inhibitor concentration, and reached a maximum and uniform value at a critical concentration of about 25 ppmw. The formation of iron chloride/hydroxide intermediates was mitigated by the uniform adsorbed inhibitor layer, leading to enhanced corrosion protection of carbon steel in aggressive environment.

Benzothiazole derivatives-based supramolecular assemblies as efficient corrosion inhibitors for copper in artificial seawater: Formation, interfacial release and protective mechanisms

Zining Liu et al.

Summary: Host-guest assemblies of beta-cyclodextrin (beta-CD) loaded with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) or 2-aminobenzothiazole (ABT) were used to distinguish their anticorrosive mechanisms for copper in aqueous phase. The protective efficacies were evaluated and MBT and ABT showed optimal inhibition efficiencies of 95.6% and 89.2% respectively using cathodic-dominated mixed-type inhibition mechanism at a dosage of 0.5 g/L. The differentiated inhibition behaviors were attributed to varied guest release mechanisms and different bonding strengths of Cu-S and Cu-N, as supported by theoretical simulations.

Enhanced corrosion inhibition of copper in acidic environment by cathodic control of interface formation with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole

Vishant Garg et al.

Summary: In this study, electrochemistry and advanced surface analyzes were used to investigate the inhibition of copper corrosion by 2-mercapto-benzothiazole (2-MBT) in hydrochloric aqueous solution and the influence of electrochemical control on the formation of the inhibiting interface. The results showed that reduction of the native surface oxide prior to exposure to the inhibitor significantly decreased the rate of anodic dissolution. Increasing the exposure time to the inhibitor enhanced the protection against dissolution. 2-MBT adsorbed as multilayers and bonded to both metallic copper and residual copper oxide islands through its sulphur atoms. Partial dissociation of the molecule released exocyclic sulphur, which bonded to metallic Cu. Further dissociation released endocyclic sulphur, induced by anodic polarization, causing defects in the organic layer and compromising its barrier properties.

Summary: X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and time-of-flight secondary ions mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) analyses were used to investigate the interaction between copper and mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT) in aqueous solution with and without NaCl. MBT forms multilayers on the copper oxide surface, inhibiting oxide layer growth and chloride adsorption. The adsorption of MBT also inhibits copper dissolution in NaCl.
