Dynamic thresholds for the resilience assessment of road traffic networks to wildfires

Erica Arango et al.

Summary: The severe effects of recent extreme wildfire events have shown that simply suppressing fires is not enough. Instead, it is important to accept the inevitability of wildfire hazards and focus on building resilient systems. However, existing decision-making tools based on resilience have significant drawbacks. This paper proposes a new approach and methodology for assessing the resilience of road traffic networks to wildfires, addressing these drawbacks and considering the different functions of the system under various wildfire conditions. The methodology is demonstrated on five traffic networks and highlights the importance of appropriate wildfire management for enhancing the capacity of traffic networks to cope with wildfires.

Mathematical modeling of interdependent infrastructure: An object-oriented approach for generalized network-system analysis

Neetesh Sharma et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new mathematical formulation that models infrastructure as a set of generalized flow network objects and simulates interdependencies among infrastructure using dynamic interfaces. The formulation can also model bilateral and looped interdependencies, providing guidelines for selecting boundaries and resolutions.

Resilience-oriented optimal post-disruption reconfiguration for coupled traffic-power systems

Hongping Wang et al.

Summary: The increasing penetration of grid-enabled electric vehicles (EVs) has led to a growing interdependence between road networks (RNs) and power networks (PNs) for normal operation. However, there have been limited studies on the impact of EVs on the interdependent traffic-power system during restoration from a disruptive event. This study investigates the restoration planning of independent RNs and PNs, as well as interdependent traffic-power systems, and proposes a mixed integer program model to optimize system resilience and minimize performance loss.

Efficient evaluation of stochastic traffic flow models using Gaussian process approximation

Pieter Jacob Storm et al.

Summary: This paper studies a Gaussian process approximation for a class of stochastic traffic flow models and demonstrates its effectiveness in evaluating joint vehicle-density distributions in road traffic networks. It discusses the computational complexity and impact of the assumption regarding vehicles' headways on the approximation accuracy.

Agent-based model on resilience-oriented rapid responses of road networks under seismic hazard

Li Sun et al.

Summary: This paper explores a new approach to minimize functionality losses of Road Networks (RNs) under earthquake hazards by leveraging post-shock rapid responses. An agent-based modelling (ABM) framework is developed for nuanced examination on resilience of earthquake-damaged RNs. Through a case-study in Luchon, France, post-shock rapid responses are shown to be an effective strategy to increase the recovery rate of RNs' functionality in the aftermath of damaging earthquakes.

Probabilistic risk assessment for interdependent critical infrastructures: A scenario-driven dynamic stochastic model

Weilan Suo et al.

Summary: This study focuses on developing a comprehensive probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) model for critical infrastructures (CIs) with the integration of multisource data to support risk profile judgment and weakness identification. Through multidimensional scenario analysis and a scenario-driven dynamic stochastic model, decision makers are provided with support to clarify overall risk profiles and develop risk prevention measures for CIs.

Optimizing the resilience of interdependent infrastructures to regional natural hazards with combined improvement measures

Jingjing Kong et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a model for developing infrastructure resilience improvement strategy to natural hazards on a regional scale, with combined pre- and post-disaster resilience improvement measures (RIMs). The model aims to maximize the expected value of the resilience of interdependent infrastructure systems. The results show that combined RIMs can increase the resilience value of interdependent infrastructure systems compared to individual RIM, and the optimal combination of RIMs changes with the requirements on the proactive and reactive capacities as well as the intensity of natural hazards and the response time of restoration activities.
