Production of polylactic acid biocomposite reinforced with environmentally friendly cellulose nanofiber derived from steam-treated bamboo

Akihiro Suzuki et al.

Summary: Cellulose nanofiber-blended polylactic acid composites were prepared using cellulose fibers extracted from bamboo through high-temperature and high-pressure steam treatment. The optimal conditions for steam pressure and extraction process grinding time were investigated, as well as the mixing ratio of cellulose nanofibers and polylactic acid. The composites exhibited significantly improved strength compared to pure polylactic acid, making them promising reinforcing materials for biodegradable polymers.

Prospects for manufacturing of complex 3D-shaped all-cellulose composites

Anton Baranov et al.

Summary: In this study, the production of all-cellulose composites (ACCs) with 3D geometries was explored for the first time using conventional vacuum and compression molding procedures. The dimensional accuracy of the final 3D forms was analyzed by 3D laser scanning, and it was found that the choice of coagulant type strongly influenced the dimensional accuracy of the as-molded ACCs.

Summary: In this study, hybrid thermoplastic composites with high interfacial joining strength were fabricated using a plasma treatment strategy and injection overmolding technique. Experimental investigations were carried out to determine the effects of various plasma treatments on the interfacial joining strength of the composites. The results showed that oxygen plasma treatment had the greatest effect on increasing the interfacial shear strength.

Toward a facile fabrication route for all-cellulose composite laminates via partial dissolution in aqueous tetrabutylphosphonium hydroxide solution

Anton Baranov et al.

Summary: The potential of using aqueous solutions containing TBPH for synthesizing ACCs has been explored. ACC laminates are prepared by partially dissolving cellulose II textile and then regenerating it to reform a cellulose II matrix phase, bonding the original undissolved fibers. The solvent concentration affects the microstructure, crystallinity, and tensile properties of ACCs, with TBPH enabling faster processing and improved control over properties.

Interfacial and mechanical properties of continuous ramie fiber reinforced biocomposites fabricated by in-situ impregnated 3D printing

Ping Cheng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the mechanical properties and interfacial analysis of 3D printed continuous vegetal fiber reinforced biomass based composites. The results showed that the mechanical behaviors of the biocomposites were influenced by the interfacial properties between deposited layers and between fiber/matrix interfaces. By controlling the printing parameters, significant microstructure changes were observed in the biocomposites, leading to the highest tensile strength found at specific printing conditions.

Functionality of Cellulose Nanofiber as Bio-Based Nucleating Agent and Nano-Reinforcement Material to Enhance Crystallization and Mechanical Properties of Polylactic Acid Nanocomposite

Siti Shazra Shazleen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the nucleation effect of incorporating cellulose nanofibers (CNF) into polylactic acid (PLA), showing that CNF at 3 wt.% significantly improved both the crystallization rate and mechanical properties of PLA. However, at CNF content higher than 3 wt.%, the crystallization rate decreased, indicating possible agglomeration. CNF at 3 wt.% plays a crucial role in enhancing the performance of PLA.

Combined Effects of Cellulose Nanofiber Nucleation and Maleated Polylactic Acid Compatibilization on the Crystallization Kinetic and Mechanical Properties of Polylactic Acid Nanocomposite

Siti Shazra Shazleen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the combined effects of CNF nucleation and PLA-g-MA compatibilization on the crystallization kinetics and mechanical properties of polylactic acid (PLA). While PLA-g-MA improved nucleation in PLA/PLA-g-MA, it did not enhance crystallization rate in PLA/PLA-g-MA/CNF3 compared to uncompatibilized PLA/CNF3. Tensile strength decreased with more PLA-g-MA, but Young's modulus significantly increased, contributing to the rigidity of the PLA nanocomposites.
