Risk coupling analysis of road transportation accidents of hazardous materials in complicated maritime environment

Jian Guo et al.

Summary: This paper studies the risk coupling problems in hazardous material transportation safety in coastal areas by analyzing 362 accidents. The results show that the risk of hazardous materials transportation has a gradually increasing trend with the increase of risk coupling factors. The risk coupling of driver factors and road environmental factors leads to a high probability of accidents.

Risk assessment of coupling links in hazardous chemicals maritime transportation system

Laihao Ma et al.

Summary: This study proposes a hybrid method that integrates the Functional Resonance Analysis Method (FRAM), fuzzy set theory, and risk matrix to quantitatively assess the risks triggered by failure coupling links (CLs) between upstream and downstream functions in the hazardous chemicals maritime transportation system (HCMTS). The FRAM identified a total of 10 essential functions and 16 CLs involved in HCMTS. Fuzzy set theory was used to aggregate the weights of risk consequence and likelihood for CLs. A risk matrix with a continuous scale was utilized to assess and rank the CLs' risks. The results demonstrate that the CLs between the functions <Consignment of HCs> and <Protection> have higher risk indexes (RIs) in the whole chain of HCMTS.

Hybrid Bayesian-Copula-based risk assessment for tall buildings subject to wind loads considering various uncertainties

Xiao-Wei Zheng et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a hybrid Bayesian-Copula method to assess wind-induced risk for tall buildings considering various uncertainties. The Bayes theorem is used to develop posterior probability distributions of unknown parameters in the marginal probability distribution of wind speed and direction as well as in the demand model for fragility estimates. The Copula technique is used to construct the joint probability model of wind speed and direction by linking their corresponding marginal distributions in a Bayesian-based framework. The application of this study shows that epistemic uncertainty has significant influences on total damage probability based on deformation and comfort. Compared to existing studies, the main contribution of this paper is the consideration of both epistemic uncertainty and aleatory uncertainty in the proposed Bayesian-based framework.

Minimisation of the probability of serious road accidents in the transport of dangerous goods

Mariusz Izdebski et al.

Summary: The article discusses how to determine the routes of vehicles transporting dangerous materials in order to minimize the probability of road accidents, presenting a model and case study based on a transport network in Poland. By adjusting theoretical distributions and using heuristic algorithms, effective routes for transporting dangerous goods with minimal accident probabilities were determined, providing valuable insights for solving complex problems in dangerous cargo transportation.

Risk coupling analysis of subsea blowout accidents based on dynamic Bayesian network and NK model

Zengkai Liu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel method to quantify risk coupling of subsea blowout accidents based on DBN and NK model. By classifying and analyzing risk factors, a developed DBN model can describe the dynamic characteristics of risk evolution and risk coupling of the accidents. Sensitive analysis and quantification of risk factors' influences can be performed with this model.

A novel vulnerability model considering synergistic effect of fire and overpressure in chemical processing facilities

Long Ding et al.

Summary: A novel vulnerability model called the fire and explosion synergistic effect model (FESEM) is proposed to estimate time to failure and escalation probability of equipment under spatial-temporal synergistic of heat radiation and overpressure. The study demonstrates significant synergistic effects and discusses parameters influencing time to failure and escalation probability, serving as an essential guide for preventing and controlling domino effects.

Risk assessment of hazardous materials transportation: A review of research progress in the last thirty years

Jian Guo et al.

Summary: Hazardous materials transportation accidents have been occurring frequently, leading to significant casualties and property losses. This review analyzes the research progress of risk assessment of hazardous materials transportation from 1991 to 2020. The results show that the research on risk assessment models for road transportation is comprehensive, while that for railway and intermodal transportation is insufficient. The conditional value-at-risk model provides a flexible decision-making framework. The conclusion that the risk of railway and multimodal transportation of hazardous materials is lower than that of road transportation is not universally applicable. The advantages of different transportation modes can be combined to improve the system's capabilities. The review identifies existing trends, research gaps, and future research directions.

A novel fuzzy dynamic Bayesian network for dynamic risk assessment and uncertainty propagation quantification in uncertainty environment

Xiaoxue Guo et al.

Summary: Risk assessment is crucial in safety engineering, and conventional methods may have limitations in handling time dependence and data uncertainty. This study introduces a novel fuzzy dynamic Bayesian network (FDBN) methodology to improve dynamic risk assessment by incorporating fuzzy set theory and expert elicitation to quantify uncertainty propagation over time under data uncertainty. The comparison with traditional methods shows the credibility and robustness of the proposed methodology.

A Bayesian Network Approach for Modeling Dependent Seismic Failures in a Nuclear Power Plant Probabilistic Risk Assessment

Jonathan DeJesus Segarra et al.

Summary: The importance of modeling the dependency between seismic failures of multiple components in a nuclear power plant probabilistic risk assessment has been discussed since the 1980s. The proposed Bayesian network approach provides better results in staying within the lower and upper bounds of system fragility compared to the Reed-McCann method, and it performs similarly to the First-Order Reliability Method and Monte Carlo simulation.
