Depth of discharge characteristics and control strategy to optimize electric vehicle battery life

Sang-Jun Park et al.

Summary: In order to comply with the global low-carbon green growth policy, the automobile industry is shifting from internal combustion engine to electric vehicles that use high-Ni cathode active materials with high energy density to prioritize mileage per charge. However, the high-Ni active material presents poor cycle characteristics due to impurities generated by cation mixing and structural instability. This study improved the energy efficiency and safety of the battery by controlling the depth of discharge (DOD) according to the state of health (SOH) of the battery and found that DOD70 at 100-90% SOH and DOD60 at 90-80% SOH were the most effective in terms of cycle characteristics and safety.

Physics inspired model for estimating 'cycles to failure' as a function of depth of discharge for lithium ion batteries

Rutooj D. Deshpande et al.

Summary: Estimating the lifespan of lithium ion batteries is crucial for electric vehicles and energy storage applications; while calendar aging is relatively established, developing a cycle life counterpart remains challenging. Empirical relations and physics-based models are used to estimate cycles to failure, especially in grid scale applications with mild operating conditions.

Electric Vehicle Battery Cell Cycle Aging in Vehicle to Grid Operations: A Review

Timo A. Lehtola et al.

Summary: This study explores the importance of providing electric vehicle owners with vehicle to grid operations information before participating in power grid support, focusing on the impact of battery charge and discharge on battery lifespan. By developing battery aging models to calculate the lifetime and cost of V2G operations, the study highlights the influence of factors such as time, temperature, state of charge, and number of cycles on battery durability. Results suggest that scheduled charging and reducing discharge depth can extend battery lifetime.
