Quantifying the bioaccumulation of Pb to Chlorella vulgaris in the presence of dissolved organic matters with different molecular weights

Zhiqiang Shi et al.

Summary: Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is commonly found in natural waters and has significant effects on the toxicity of heavy metals. This study investigated the MW-dependent heterogeneities in the bioaccumulation of Pb to Chlorella vulgaris in the presence of DOMs with different molecular weights. The results showed that the presence of bulk DOM can decrease the bioaccumulation of Pb, however, the specific effects were MW- and type-dependent. The content of phenolic-OH was found to play a critical role in altering the bioaccumulation of Pb.

Heavy metal biosorption by Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) recovered from anammox granular sludge

Benedetta Pagliaccia et al.

Summary: The recovery and conversion of Extracellular Polymeric Substances (EPS) from sewage sludge into bio-based commodities could improve the economics and environmental sustainability of wastewater treatment. The application of EPS as a biosorbent for heavy metal removal showed high adsorption capacities and diverse adsorption mechanisms, making it suitable for treating complex wastewaters.

Selection and characterization of plant-derived alkaloids with strong antialgal inhibition: growth inhibition selectivity and inhibitory mechanism

Guangpu Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the inhibition of six plant-derived alkaloids on bloom-forming cyanobacteria. Neferine and nuciferine showed stronger inhibition on the growth of Microcystis aeruginosa compared to other alkaloids. Nuciferine had no inhibition on other types of microalgae and even increased the diversity and species homogeneity of phytoplankton in the water samples.

Adsorption of heavy metals from the aqueous solution using activated biomass from Ulva flexuosa

R. Lekshmi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the biosorption potential of Ulva flexuosa biomass for the removal of highly toxic heavy metals from wastewater. The results showed that the acid modified biomass exhibited high suitability for the adsorption of Cd2+, Co2+, and Zn2+ ions. Factors such as adsorbent dosage, pH, contact time, and agitation speed were found to significantly affect the adsorption efficiency. The findings highlight the potential application of algal biomass in the removal of various heavy metals from the environment.

Biosorption of heavy metal ions by green alga Neochloris oleoabundans: Effects of metal ion properties and cell wall structure

Siwei Gu et al.

Summary: The effects of metal ion properties and the cell wall structure of green alga Neochloris oleoabundans on five selected heavy metal ions were investigated. Pb(II) showed the strongest inhibitive effects on the adsorption of other metal ions, followed by Cu(II). The adsorption capacity of N. oleoabundans biomass to the tested two-valence metal ions is proportional to the electronegativity and inversely proportional to the radius of the metal ions.
