Ammonium Chloride Associated Aerosol Liquid Water Enhances Haze in Delhi, India

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: This study reveals that Delhi, a highly polluted city, has the highest reported aerosol water content worldwide. The presence of high aerosol water exacerbates air pollution and reduces visibility, while also inhibiting the dispersion of pollutants.

Spatial distribution of PM2.5 chemical components during winter at five sites in Northeast Asia: High temporal resolution measurement study

N. K. Kim et al.

Summary: The Center for Fine Particle Research Initiative in East Asia considering National Differences (FRIEND) project was launched in 2020 to characterize air pollution in Northeast Asia. It aims to elucidate the spatiotemporal characteristics of atmospheric aerosols (e.g., PM2.5) through high-resolution measurements of fine particle chemical speciation, physical characteristics, and comprehensive monitoring of gaseous and particulate components. The study found that while synoptic weather conditions determined the variations in PM2.5 mass concentrations at the five sites, the levels of chemical components differed, reflecting local emissions and formation characteristics. A common characteristic among the sites was the high proportion of organic aerosols (OA) in fine particles.

Comparison of Phase States of PM2.5 over Megacities, Seoul and Beijing, and Their Implications on Particle Size Distribution

Mijung Song et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phase state of fine mode aerosols (PM2.5) in Seoul and Beijing by collecting filter samples and using optical microscopy. The results show differences in the phase states of PM2.5 between the two cities, which are related to the chemical compositions of the aerosols and ambient relative humidity.

A predictive viscosity model for aqueous electrolytes and mixed organic-inorganic aerosol phases

Joseph Lilek et al.

Summary: Aerosol viscosity is influenced by mixture composition, temperature, and relative humidity. A new model, AIOMFAC-VISC, extends the group-contribution model to predict viscosity for aqueous electrolyte solutions and aqueous organic-inorganic mixtures. The model considers ion-specific expressions for electrolyte solutions and tested different mixing approaches for organic-inorganic mixtures. The predictions showed high accuracy and physical meaningfulness.

Characteristics of PM2.5 pollution in Beijing after the improvement of air quality

Xiaojuan Huang et al.

Summary: Following the implementation of strict clean air policies in Beijing, the study found a decrease in PM2.5 concentration, with spring having the highest levels. Secondary nitrate and vehicular emissions were identified as the main sources of PM2.5. Contributions from coal combustion decreased significantly, while contributions from EC and NO3- increased during weekends.

The particle phase state during the biomass burning events

Yuechen Liu et al.

Summary: Through experiments and observations, it was found that under dry conditions, biomass burning aerosols (BBA) are in a non-solid state, differing from secondary organic aerosols (SOA). This suggests that under dry conditions, the diffusion coefficient of gaseous molecules in BBA may be much higher than in SOA.
