Ultra-Broadband Thermal Emitter for Daytime Radiative Cooling with Metal-Insulator-Metal Metamaterials

Huaiyuan Yin et al.

Summary: A novel thermal emitter design using metal-insulator-metal structure is proposed for efficient daytime radiative cooling. It achieves ultrahigh absorption of 99.67% and strong reflection of 94.86% in the first atmospheric window and solar band, respectively. Material analysis and case studies show the importance of refractive index matching for high absorption. The thermal emitter demonstrates high emissivity under different incident angles and achieves a net cooling power of 96.39 W/m(2) in the daytime.

Optical quantum Hall Goos-Hanchen effect in graphene

D. Jahani et al.

Summary: A strong Goos-Hanchen (GH) effect at a prism-graphene interface in the quantum Hall effect (QHE) condition is reported. By fully quantum describing the temperature-dependent surface conductivity of graphene in the unconventional quantum Hall regime, magnetically strong tunable QHE GH shifts are observed. The study derives generalized Fresnel coefficients with antisymmetric conductivity tensor for the Kerr phase of linearly polarized incident light. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that at low temperatures, GH shifts exhibit plateaus as the magnetic field intensity increases. This quantum modulation of the GH effect in graphene by applied magnetostatic bias may provide new opportunities for optical devices and QHE sensing applications in 2D materials.

Magneto-tunable terahertz absorption in single-layer graphene: A general approach

D. Jahani et al.

Summary: Terahertz (THz) anisotropic absorption in graphene can be significantly modified by applying a static magnetic field, resulting in high anisotropic absorption for linearly polarized light at specific scattering angles. The absorption of monolayer graphene corresponds to its surface optical conductivity in the presence of a static magnetic field. Additionally, the temperature-dependent conductivity of graphene can lead to step-by-step absorption at very low temperatures, making it suitable for novel graphene-based THz applications.

Aperiodic perforated graphene in optical nanocavity absorbers

Samina Bidmeshkipour et al.

Summary: Aperiodic perforated graphene layers synthesized through oxygen plasma etching have been utilized in fabricating optical nanocavity absorbers with significantly improved absorption properties. The study reveals that the absorption performance of the nanocavity heavily relies on the electrical interaction between the nanopores of the perforated graphene layer and incident light. This graphene-based nanocavity resonator shows potential for designing highly efficient electromagnetic wave absorbers with effective optical absorption features in demanding two-dimensional coatings.

Graphene nanopores in broadband wide-angle optical cavity resonance absorbers

Samina Bidmeshkipour et al.

Summary: A cavity resonator containing graphene nanopores has been proposed for broadband wide-angle absorption of light. The multilayer design shows significant increase in absorption efficiency in a broad spectral range, attributed to cavity resonance and absorptions induced by oxygen-containing functional groups formed around the nanopores of graphene.

Tunable plasmon induced transparency and multispectral transparency with large group delay in graphene metamaterials

Chunzhen Fan et al.

Summary: Graphene metamaterials have achieved tunable plasmon-induced transparency and multispectral transparency in the THz region. The number of optical resonant peaks can be flexibly altered with the designed strip length, and multispectral transparency can also be dynamically tuned via Fermi energy. These active and switchable graphene metamaterials show promise in applications such as optical filters, switchers, and sensors.

Summary: This study utilizes the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method to simulate a multi-band ideal absorber and proposes a new method based on critical coupling and guided resonance. The physical mechanism is analyzed through impedance matching and coupled mode theory (CMT). By adjusting the geometric parameters of the structure, the spectral position and absorption rate of the absorption peak can be tuned.

Highly tunable plasmon-induced transparency with Dirac semimetal metamaterials*

Chunzhen Fan et al.

Summary: Based on Dirac semimetal metamaterials, this research investigated the tunable plasmon induced transparency (PIT) phenomenon, revealing a pronounced transparency window that can be dynamically adjusted with Fermi energy. The transparency window exhibits a distinct blue shift with larger Fermi energy and can be switched on and off with different polarization angles. Additionally, a small variation of the refractive index of the substrate can induce a clear movement of the PIT transparency window, providing guidance for optical sensing applications.
