Laser powder bed fusion of bio-inspired honeycomb structures: Effect of twist angle on compressive behaviors

Kaijie Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, novel honeycomb structures with twisted features were designed and manufactured using laser powder bed fusion. The impact of twist angle on compressive behavior was experimentally investigated, showing that a 30-degree twist angle resulted in the most uniform stress distribution and highest specific compressive strength and energy absorption ability. Finite element simulation revealed that structures with 0.75 mm wall thickness and 3 unit cells per side exhibited the highest specific energy absorption ability among honeycomb structures with a 30-degree twist angle.

Additively Manufactured Gradient Porous Ti-6Al-4V Hip Replacement Implants Embedded with Cell-Laden Gelatin Methacryloyl Hydrogels

Elham Davoodi et al.

Summary: The development of porous implants with conflicting design criteria has been overcome by designing implants and scaffolds based on interconnected TPMS to enhance both biological response and mechanical strength. Gradually decreasing porosity from the surface to the center provides mechanical strength, while studying unit cell size helps discover the printability limit where specific surface area is maximized.

Mechanical characteristics and deformation mechanism of functionally graded triply periodic minimal surface structures fabricated using stereolithography

Cheng Zhang et al.

Summary: Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structures are widely used for their smooth surface and pore interconnectivity, and a novel design approach based on the log-sigmoid function has been proposed in this study. Functionally graded TPMS structures were successfully fabricated using stereolithography, with the I-WP type showing superior mechanical properties. The study revealed a combination of stretching-and bending-dominated failure deformations in these structures.

Design, mechanical properties and energy absorption capability of graded-thickness triply periodic minimal surface structures fabricated by selective laser melting

Xiaojie Fan et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel method for designing graded-thickness TPMS structures and summarizes and compares the manufacturability, mechanical properties, and energy absorption capacities of Ti6Al4V graded samples with different thicknesses and TPMS types. The results reveal that constant-thickness TPMS samples exhibit good stiffness, strength, and energy absorption capacities, while graded-thickness samples avoid large stress fluctuations and show higher elastic moduli and cumulative energy absorption values than constant-thickness samples. Additionally, the local curvature distribution predicts the deformation behavior of TPMS structures.
