Aspirations, risk preferences, and investments in agricultural technologies

Summary: We find an inverted U-shaped relationship between income aspirations gap and investments in agricultural technologies among cacao farmers in Ecuador. The relationship is robust to the inclusion of risk preference parameters, suggesting the presence of psychological constraints to investments. Our findings support the existing theory that moderate aspirations provide the best incentives for future investments.

Locus of Control and Investment in Training

Summary: This study extends standard models of work-related training by incorporating workers' locus of control into the investment decision. It finds that locus of control influences the uptake of general training, but not specific training. Using data from the German Socioeconomic Panel, the study empirically validates the prediction and provides evidence that locus of control affects participation in training through workers' expectations about future wage increases, rather than actual wage increases.

Measuring Skills in Developing Countries

Summary: Measures of cognitive, noncognitive, and technical skills were found to be reliable and internally consistent in a survey experiment conducted in Western Kenya, while technical skills were noted to be very noisy, and noncognitive skills had nonclassical measurement error. Addressing both random and systematic measurement error led to some improvements and clearer predictions, although concerns remained. These findings were replicated in Colombia.
