Disentangling task-selection failures from task-execution failures in task switching: an assessment of different paradigms

Luca Moretti et al.

Summary: Differentiating errors based on cognitive mechanisms has provided useful diagnostic tools for neuropsychologists. However, there have been limited studies utilizing different types of errors in multitasking situations to inform theories of cognitive flexibility. This study aims to use various methodologies to distinguish errors caused by task-selection failure and task-execution failure, and evaluate their impact on inhibitory mechanisms in task switching. The results show promising possibilities in detecting and assessing the differential impacts of response- and task-selection failures.

Response-repetition costs in task switching do not index a simple response-switch bias: Evidence from manipulating the number of response alternatives

Iring Koch et al.

Summary: Response repetitions aid performance when a task repeats but impair performance when a task switches. Theoretical accounts regarding this interaction have been controversial. This study used an un-cued, predictable task-switching paradigm with univalent targets to investigate whether a simple bias to switch the response can account for the observed interaction. The results showed that the bias to switch response cannot explain the response-repetition costs in task-switch trials, particularly in a three-choice task.

Binding of task-irrelevant contextual features in task switching

Elena Benini et al.

Summary: This study investigates the binding and retrieval processes of task-irrelevant context features in cued task switching. The results show that repeating the task-irrelevant context feature improves performance when the task and response are repeated. Additionally, the task-irrelevant context feature only increases task repetition benefits when it appears synchronously with the cue, without a 300-ms delay.
