Hirschsprung's disease in low- and middle-income countries

Stephen Trinidad et al.

Summary: Hirschsprung's disease is a common cause of pediatric bowel obstruction in low- and middle-income countries. Patients in these countries often experience delayed presentation and have higher morbidity and mortality rates. Delayed diagnosis and treatment, socioeconomic and cultural barriers, and limited healthcare resources are the multifactorial causes of the delay. In these countries, diagnosis is often based on clinical presentation and radiographic findings, and treatment typically involves a multi-stage diversion instead of a single-stage pull-through. Post-operatively, HD patients in these countries have higher complication and mortality rates.
