Interrupted DNA and Slow Silver Cluster Luminescence

David Lewis et al.

Summary: A DNA-silver cluster conjugate consists of a silver core embedded within the DNA nucleobases, allowing spectral tuning of the silver cluster. The introduction of a thymine disrupts the DNA strand, resulting in a chromophore with green and red luminescence. This study reveals that specific breaks in the DNA backbone can regulate the protection and luminescence properties of the silver cluster adduct.

Chloride Ligands on DNA-Stabilized Silver Nanoclusters

Anna Gonzalez-Rosell et al.

Summary: DNA-stabilized silver nanoclusters (AgN-DNAs) can possess additional chloride ligands, which increase their stability in biologically relevant concentrations of chloride. This finding provides a new route to expand the structure-property relationships of AgN-DNAs and to enhance their stability for biophotonics applications.

Theoretical Analysis of the Electronic Structure and Optical Properties of DNA-Stabilized Silver Cluster Ag16Cl2 in Aqueous Solvent

Sami Malola et al.

Summary: In this study, the ground-state electronic structure and optical absorption of a bright NIR-emitting cluster Ag16Cl2 stabilized by DNA strands were analyzed using DFT. The charge of the cluster in aqueous solvent was determined, and the silver-DNA interactions and their effect on the cluster charge were analyzed. The study also assessed the suitability of different DFT exchange-correlation functionals by benchmarking to experimental optical data. This work lays a foundation for understanding the electronic, chiroptical, and fluorescence properties of these biocompatible nanostructures in future theoretical studies.

The effect of inosine on the spectroscopic properties and crystal structure of a NIR-emitting DNA-stabilized silver nanocluster

Cecilia Cerretani et al.

Summary: The effect of replacing guanosines with inosines in the stabilizing strands of NIR emissive DNA-Ag16NC was studied. The spectroscopic behavior of the inosine mutants varied depending on the position, with a shorter fluorescence decay time when guanosine at position 7 was replaced and a longer decay time when inosine was at position 9. The observed changes could be explained by the structural information obtained from single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements.

A single nucleobase tunes nonradiative decay in a DNA-bound silver cluster

Yuyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: The specific nucleobase subunits within a DNA strand modulate cluster-ligand interactions and brightness, with guanosine and inosine affecting the fluorescence brightness and decay rate differently. Nonradiative decay is 7x higher with guanosine than inosine, indicating a potential correlation between nonradiative decay and selective coordination with specific nucleobase subunits.

The effect of deuterium on the photophysical properties of DNA-stabilized silver nanoclusters

Cecilia Cerretani et al.

Summary: This study found that using D2O and H2O as solvents has different effects on the spectroscopic properties of two DNA-AgNCs, with one DNA-AgNC having a shortened ns decay time in D2O and the other DNA-AgNC having a prolonged ns decay time and approaching unity in fluorescence quantum yield at 5 degrees C.
