Relationship Between Preoperative Nutritional Status and Predicting Short-Term Complications Following Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty

Jamie C. Heimroth et al.

Summary: This study found that patients who are underweight or have diabetes are more likely to be malnourished. Malnutrition increases the risk of complications within 30 days of surgery following revision THA. Therefore, screening the nutritional status of underweight and diabetic patients prior to revision THA can help minimize complications.

Agreement between GLIM and PG-SGA for diagnosis of malnutrition depends on the screening tool used in GLIM

Christine Henriksen et al.

Summary: This study validates the concordance between the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) process and the Patient Generated-Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA). The study found that the consistency between GLIM and PG-SGA depends on the screening tool used in the GLIM process.

Nutritional and Physical Prehabilitation in Elective Orthopedic Surgery: Rationale and Proposal for Implementation

Matteo Briguglio et al.

Summary: The previous belief that bed rest and low calorie intake were sufficient for recovery in orthopedic surgery has been replaced by the understanding of the importance of good nutrition and exercise. Malnutrition and sarcopenia are detrimental to surgical patients, but a systematic approach to preoperative analysis and risk correction can significantly improve prognosis.

Utilization and validation of the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM): A scoping review

Maria Isabel T. D. Correia et al.

Summary: Despite various published diagnostic criteria, the diagnosis of malnutrition remains a challenge. In 2018, the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) published evidence-based criteria for the diagnosis of malnutrition in adults. This scoping review examined how the GLIM criteria have been used in published literature and compared the reported validation methods to published validation guidance.

Malnutrition, Body Mass Index, and Associated Risk of Complications After Posterior Lumbar Spine Fusion: A 3:1 Matched Cohort Analysis

Keir G. Johnson et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the effect of malnutrition on complications after posterior lumbar fusion (PLF). The results indicate that malnutrition may independently increase the risk of various complications after PLF. Surgeons may consider preoperative optimization for malnutrition patients to reduce complication risk.

Prediction of Long-Term Recovery From Disability Using Hemoglobin-Based Models: Results From a Cohort of 1,392 Patients Undergoing Spine Surgery

Matteo Briguglio et al.

Summary: Hemoglobin and its associated blood values can predict clinical success after spine surgery. High preoperative hemoglobin and high red blood cell count are associated with good recovery, while low baseline disability, prolonged hospitalization, and long surgical times are associated with poor recovery. The neural network model shows fair diagnostic performance but is unreliable in predicting poor patient-reported outcomes.

What is the Optimal Body Mass Index Range for Older Adults?

Muharrem Kiskac et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the appropriate body mass index (BMI) range for older adults in order to minimize complications. The results showed that older adults with BMI <25 and >35 kg/m(2) were at a higher risk of functional decline, gait and balance problems, fall risk, decrease in muscle strength, and malnutrition. The optimum BMI range was found to be 31-32 and 27-28 kg/m(2) for female and male, respectively.

Malnutrition diagnosed by the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition criteria as a predictor of gait ability in patients with hip fracture

Hikaru Kobayashi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine whether GLIM or ESPEN criteria were more appropriate for predicting gait ability in patients with hip fractures. The results showed that the GLIM criteria were useful for predicting gait ability at discharge, while the ESPEN criteria did not show statistically significant differences.

Association between malnutrition and leucopenia in patients with osteosarcoma

Haixiao Wu et al.

Summary: This study found that the nutritional status of osteosarcoma patients is closely associated with the occurrence and severity of leucopenia (LP) during chemotherapy. Both adolescent and adult patients have a high incidence of malnutrition and LP. Malnutrition before chemotherapy is an independent risk factor for LP after chemotherapy. Therefore, necessary nutritional support should be provided to patients during osteosarcoma chemotherapy to improve its efficacy.

Nutritional Orthopedics and Space Nutrition as Two Sides of the Same Coin: A Scoping Review

Matteo Briguglio

Summary: Nutritional research has expanded into Nutritional Orthopedics and Space Nutrition, each addressing specific dietary challenges faced by hospital patients and space travelers. Despite their apparent differences, similarities in nutritional issues such as food insecurity, malnutrition, and musculoskeletal health are evident in both fields. Collaboration between orthopedic nutritionists and space experts is crucial for developing tailored diets and nutritional approaches for optimal health outcomes.
