Origami-Inspired Soft Pneumatic Actuators: Generalization and Design Optimization

Abdelrahman Zaghloul et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on improving the applicability of origami-inspired soft pneumatic actuators (OSPA) and proposes a rapid fabrication method for OSPA of various sizes and materials. The largest OSPA shows a force-to-weight ratio of 124 and can lift a 44 kg mass using -85 kPa supply pressure. Experiments demonstrate that the OSPA can perform 150,000 contraction/extension cycles with minimal degradation. The paper also introduces a computationally efficient FEA-based constrained optimization method for maximizing an OSPA's work output.

Evaluation of two complementary modeling approaches for fiber-reinforced soft actuators

Soheil Habibian et al.

Summary: This paper proposes two complementary modeling techniques for soft robotic actuator called Fiber-Reinforced Elastomeric Enclosure (FREE) to address the challenges of using robots in proximity to humans. The results of experimental simulations using a lumped-parameter model demonstrate the feasibility of FREEs in soft robotic applications. Finite element analysis is used to study FREE design parameters and the workspace achieved with multiple FREEs. The study confirms the impact of winding angle on FREE rotation and extends the analysis to include the effect on force and moment generation. The paper concludes by discussing the advantages and limitations of lumped-parameter and finite element models in understanding the behavior of FREEs and FREE modules.

Piston-Driven Pneumatically-Actuated Soft Robots: Modeling and Backstepping Control

Maximilian Stolzle et al.

Summary: This study proposes a model-based control strategy for pneumatically-actuated soft robots. By establishing a model that describes the relationship between the robot's state, acting fluidic pressure, and piston dynamics, the backstepping control method can be applied to non-linear feedback coupling systems. The specialized application example is a robot with piecewise constant curvature.

Koopman-Based Control of a Soft Continuum Manipulator Under Variable Loading Conditions

Daniel Bruder et al.

Summary: This letter presents a data-driven approach to identify soft manipulator models that enable consistent control under variable loading conditions. By incorporating loads into a linear Koopman operator model as states and estimating their values online, autonomous control of a pneumatically actuated soft continuum manipulator is achieved. Experimental results show that the controller outperforms models that do not explicitly account for loading, demonstrating the efficacy of this approach in executing real-world manipulation tasks.

Data-Driven Control of Soft Robots Using Koopman Operator Theory

Daniel Bruder et al.

Summary: Controlling soft robots with precision is challenging, but Koopman operator theory offers a data-driven approach to construct explicit dynamical models for better control. By applying the Koopman-based method, three MPC controllers for a pneumatic soft robot arm were developed and showed to be over three times more accurate than a benchmark controller based on a linear state-space model.

Finite Element Modeling of Soft Fluidic Actuators: Overview and Recent Developments

Matheus S. Xavier et al.

Summary: This review article discusses the finite element analysis of soft actuators, focusing on nonlinear elasticity concepts, material constants determination procedures, constitutive model parameters for silicone rubbers, and overviews of three software packages. The combination of modeling procedures, material properties, and design guidelines presented can serve as a starting point for soft robotic actuator design.
