Peripheral Nerve Involvement at First Diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis A Prospective MR Neurography Study

Olivia Foesleitner et al.

Summary: This study used quantitative magnetic resonance neurography to evaluate peripheral nerve involvement in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) at first clinical presentation, and correlated the findings with clinical, laboratory, electrophysiological, and central nervous MR imaging data. The results showed diffuse nerve changes in the tibial and peroneal nerves of MS patients, with decreased proton spin density, increased T2 relaxation time, and smaller nerve cross-sectional area compared to healthy subjects. The diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance biomarkers was assessed using receiver-operating characteristic curves.

Quantification and Proximal-to-Distal Distribution Pattern of Tibial Nerve Lesions in Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis Assessment by MR Neurography

Adriana M. Pietsch et al.

Summary: In this study, the proximal-to-distal distribution pattern of peripheral nerve lesions in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) was characterized using quantitative magnetic resonance neurography (MRN). The results showed that RRMS patients had a decrease in T2(app) and an increase in rho in the tibial nerves at the thigh and lower leg, with a slight proximal-to-distal gradient observed for T2(app) and T2-signal, but not for rho.

Diffusion MRI in Peripheral Nerves: Optimized b Values and the Role of Non-Gaussian Diffusion

Olivia Foesleitner et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the optimal tissue-specific diffusion-weighted imaging strategy in peripheral nerves. The results showed that the biexponential and kurtosis models had better curve fitting performance, and kurtosis-derived parameters may be promising novel imaging markers for peripheral nerve diseases.

Assessing Lumbar Plexus and Sciatic Nerve Damage in Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis Using Magnetisation Transfer Ratio

Ratthaporn Boonsuth et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess peripheral nervous system (PNS) damage in people with relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) using magnetisation transfer ratio (MTR) imaging at the lumbar plexus and sciatic nerve anatomical locations. The results showed significantly lower MTR values in the sciatic nerve of RRMS patients compared to healthy controls, but no significant changes were identified in the lumbar plexus.

Reliability and reproducibility of sciatic nerve magnetization transfer imaging and T2 relaxometry

Fabian Preisner et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the reliability of MTI and T2 relaxometry in MRN, finding that assessment of the sciatic nerve using these techniques is reliable with good interreader and test-retest reliability. The reported measurement imprecision values can guide future studies in interpreting quantitative MRN biomarkers accurately.
