Ring-Opening Copolymerization Using a Chromium Complex with a Readily Available Aminotriphenolate Ligand

Seung Yeon Jeong et al.

Summary: A new chromium(III) complex (2) with an aminotriphenolate ligand (LtBu,tBu) was developed as an efficient catalyst for ring-opening copolymerization to produce polyesters. The crystal structure of complex 2 showed an octahedral geometry despite the steric hindrance of LtBu,tBu. After optimizing the reaction conditions, complex 2 with a cocatalyst produced perfectly alternating polyesters with high molecular weights and low dispersity. Furthermore, the polyesters prepared using different comonomers exhibited relatively high glass transition temperatures.

Synthesis of a Biodegradable PLA: NMR Signal Deconvolution and End-Group Analysis

Juana M. Perez et al.

Summary: NMR spectroscopy is a powerful tool not only for structure determination after synthesis, but also in various fields including medicine imaging, real-time industrial processes, material sciences, and metabolomics. Students in this experiment performed a ring-opening polymerization reaction and collected 1D NMR spectra to determine the tacticity and number-average molecular weight of the polymers formed, with the deconvolution of experimental data being central to their learning process and validation of results through literature. This exercise provided students with skills in polymerization reactions, instrumental analysis, interpretation of NMR spectra, and critical evaluation of results.

Perfectly Alternating Copolymerization of Cyclic Anhydrides and Epoxides with Yttrium β-Diketiminate Complexes

Yvonne Manjarrez et al.

Summary: Monometallic yttrium beta-diketiminate complexes are active and controlled catalysts for the ring-opening copolymerization of 1-butene oxide and phthalic anhydride. The strength and number of pendant neutral donors in the beta-diketiminate ligands, as well as the choice of initiating groups, affect the polymerization rates and side reactions. The presence of a cocatalyst enhances the activity of the catalysts, while lack of cocatalysts leads to competing homopolymerization. The tunability of rare earth metal complexes in this copolymerization process makes further research in this area promising.

Combining high activity with broad monomer scope: indium salan catalysts in the ring-opening polymerization of various cyclic esters

Jonas Bruckmoser et al.

Summary: An indium alkoxide complex supported by a salan-type framework exhibits high rates, excellent control, and high tolerance in the ring-opening polymerization of cyclic esters. The use of propylene oxide as a solvent can convert an inactive indium chloro pre-catalyst into a catalytically active species with enhanced polymerization rates. The flexibility of the framework is important in catalyst design.

Trinuclear salphen-chromium(III)chloride complexes as catalysts for the alternating copolymerization of epoxides and cyclic anhydrides

Lei Cui et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that trinuclear chromium complexes of salicylaldimine, in conjunction with a nucleophilic cocatalyst, are efficient catalysts for the copolymerization of epoxides and cyclic anhydrides, producing perfectly alternating polyesters. By investigating the distance between chromium species, it was found that trinuclear salphenCr(III)-complexes with distances of approximately 7.3 angstrom exhibit high catalytic activity even at low catalyst loadings. Additionally, in situ infrared spectroscopy studies suggest that the activation energy of the trinuclear Cr(III)-salphen catalyst is lower than that of the corresponding mononuclear catalyst due to an intramolecular synergistic effect among the metal atoms.

Summary: This study reports the use of terpene-based oxides derived from beta-elemene in the development of new functional semiaromatic polyesters. By sequentially and selectively transforming double bonds through epoxidation, the degree and nature of functionality in the polymer backbone can be precisely manipulated. Furthermore, direct access to cross-linked polyesters with a higher Tg is demonstrated through ring-opening polymerization of bifunctional beta-elemene dioxide and phthalic anhydride.
