Photoactive Metal-to-Ligand Charge Transfer Excited States in 3d6 Complexes with Cr0, MnI, FeII, and CoIII

Narayan Sinha et al.

Summary: Coordination complexes and organometallic compounds with the 4d(6) and 5d(6) valence electron configurations have unique photophysical and photochemical properties related to metal-to-ligand charge transfer states. Recent progress has been made in the study of Cr-0, Mn-I, Fe-II, and Co-III compounds, which exhibit long-lived MLCT states. The search for new first-row transition metal complexes with partially filled 3d subshells and photoactive MLCT states is important for future applications in photophysics and photochemistry.

Direct Evidence for Excited Ligand Field State-based Oxidative Photoredox Chemistry of a Cobalt(III) Polypyridyl Photosensitizer

Micheal M. Alowakennu et al.

Summary: This study provides direct evidence of the highly oxidizing nature of the lowest-energy ligand-field excited state of a first-row d(6)-low-spin Co(III) photosensitizer. The redox potential associated with the excited state was determined through quenching studies and time-resolved absorption spectroscopy. The results indicate that this class of chromophores has stronger excited-state properties compared to commonly used transition metal-based photoredox agents, making them suitable for activating oxidatively resistant organic substrates in photoredox catalysis.

Cobalt(III) Carbene Complex with an Electronic Excited-State Structure Similar to Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Compounds

Narayan Sinha et al.

Summary: Unlike platinum group metals, cobalt(III) complexes with mixed metal-to-ligand and intra-ligand charge transfer properties in the excited state have not been discovered yet. A stable cobalt(III) complex with substantial mixed metal-to-ligand and intra-ligand charge transfer character in the excited state was obtained by using a rigid tridentate chelate ligand.

Not All 3MC States Are the Same: The Role of 3MCcis States in the Photochemical N⊥N Ligand Release from [Ru(bpy)2(N⊥N)]2+Complexes

Katie Eastham et al.

Summary: Ruthenium(II) complexes play an important role in the development of agents for photoactivated chemotherapy. In this study, the effects of introducing sterically encumbering methyl substituents and replacing pyridine by 1,2,3-triazole donors on the photochemical ligand release of a series of complexes were systematically investigated. The results showed that the introduction of a single sterically encumbering methyl substituent enhanced the rate of triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer state deactivation, while the replacement of pyridine by triazole donors increased the photochemical reactivity. These findings provide valuable insights into the excited-state mechanism of photochemical ligand release by Ru(II) tris-bidentate complexes.

Resolving Femtosecond Solvent Reorganization Dynamics in an Iron Complex by Nonadiabatic Dynamics Simulations

Diana Bregenholt Zederkof et al.

Summary: This study investigates the nonadiabatic dynamics of the iron complex [Fe(CN)4(bpy)]2- in aqueous solution and reveals the significant role of solute-solvent interactions in solvent reorganization and complex behavior. The simulations uncover the ultrafast intersystem crossing and the effect of nuclear motion on this process. Additionally, a branched decay mechanism from singlet metal-to-ligand charge transfer states to triplet states is observed. The findings also suggest the potential application of time-resolved X-ray solution scattering experiments in observing solvent reorganization.

Bimolecular reactivity of 3d metal-centered excited states (Cr, Mn, Fe, Co)

Christoph Foerster et al.

Summary: Metal-centered excited states in transition metal complexes have low energies and efficient decay to the ground state. The confinement of the wavefunction makes bimolecular photoinduced electron transfer and energy transfer processes challenging. However, certain complexes can engage in these processes successfully. Understanding the mechanisms and key parameters of these processes can lead to the development of catalytic photoredox and energy transfer processes.

Nonadiabatic excited-state dynamics of ReCl(CO)3(bpy) in two different solvents

Adam Srut et al.

Summary: We studied the excited-state relaxation of the complex ReCl(CO)(3)(bpy) in acetonitrile and dimethylsulfoxide solutions using nonadiabatic TD-DFT dynamics. By simulating the time-dependent populations of spin-mixed states, we monitored the temporal evolution of singlet and triplet states, fitted the bi-exponential decay kinetics, and simulated the time-resolved fluorescence spectra. Analysis of structural relaxation and solvent reorganization helped identify the factors influencing the fluorescence decay time constants.

Microsecond Photoluminescence and Photoreactivity of a Metal-Centered Excited State in a Hexacarbene-Co(III) Complex

Simon Kaufhold et al.

Summary: The photofunctionality of the cobalt-hexacarbene complex was investigated using time-resolved optical spectroscopy. The complex exhibited weak but remarkably long-lived orange photoluminescence, assigned as a rare case of luminescence from a metal-centered state in a 3d(6) complex. Singlet oxygen quenching supported the assignment of the emitting state as a triplet metal-centered state.

Photoinduced Low-Spin → High-Spin Mechanism of an Octahedral Fe(II) Complex Revealed by Synergistic Spin-Vibronic Dynamics

Matyas Papai

Summary: The study reveals a light-induced excited spin state trapping mechanism in Fe(II) solely involving metal-centered states, with dynamics controlled by Fe-N stretching and breathing wavepackets. These findings methodologically establish a new state of the art and provide a strong impetus for further intriguing dynamical studies on LS -> HS photoswitching.
