Identification of the key biochemical component contributing to disinfection byproducts in chlorinating algogenic organic matter

Lingfei Ma et al.

Summary: The main biochemical components in Algogenic organic matter (AOM) were analyzed to investigate their contributions to the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The results showed that proteins were the key contributor to DBPs in AOM. Therefore, targeted removal of proteins before the chlorination process can effectively reduce DBPs in AOM.

Heavy metal enrichment in drinking water pipe scales and speciation change with water parameters

Linlin Pan et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the ability of pipe scales to accumulate pollutants and the risk of releasing them back into bulk water, highlighting the importance of monitoring and cleaning drinking water distribution systems regularly. Changes in water quality conditions influence the speciation of heavy metals in pipe scales, increasing the risk of secondary pollution. Structural analysis reveals that pipe scales have porous structures and large specific surface areas, promoting the accumulation of contaminants.

Adsorption isotherms and kinetics for the removal of algal organic matter by granular activated carbon

Ziming Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, the relative removal efficiency of AOM and humic acid by granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption was determined through batch experiments. The adsorption data fit Freundlich isotherm models and pseudo-second order kinetic models well. Thermodynamic parameters indicated that GAC adsorption for DOM removal was endothermic and spontaneous.

Study on the occurrence of typical heavy metals in drinking water and corrosion scales in a large community in northern China

Shengnan Zhang et al.

Summary: Excessive heavy metal content in drinking water can lead to red water and acute and chronic diseases. A study was conducted to determine the distribution and migration of As, Cd, Cr, Mn, Pb, and V in drinking water distribution systems (DWDS). The study found that aged and corrosive pipes at the end of the DWDS posed a risk of excessive release of Mn. In addition, it was observed that excessive amounts of Cd, Cr, Mn, Pb, and V were released by pipe scales in the initial reaction stage.

Understanding Failure Modes of NSF/ANSI 53 Lead-Certified Point-of-Use Pitcher and Faucet Filters

Jeannie M. Purchase et al.

Summary: NSF/ANSI 53 lead-certified point-of-use filters have been distributed in cities facing lead-in-water crises, showing good performance in reducing lead exposure levels for most brands. However, some failures were encountered during extreme testing conditions, including leaking units and premature clogging. Colloidal lead waters proved to be particularly difficult to treat, with some replicate POUs failing to pass certification testing.

Co-release potential and human health risk of heavy metals from galvanized steel pipe scales under stagnation conditions of drinking water

Yimei Tian et al.

Summary: The re-release of heavy metals accumulated in the drinking water distribution systems may pose a significant threat to water quality and human health. This study found that the main source of metal release under stagnation water conditions is the acid-soluble fraction. The chronic noncarcinogenic risk caused by soluble metals can be ignored under normal stagnation times, and there is a significant linear co-release correlation between calcium and manganese.

Effect of trichloroacetic acid on iron oxidation: Implications on the control of DBPs and deposits in drinking water

Yuan Zhuang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of TCAA on iron oxidation processes, and the potential effects of resulting α-FeOOH particles on bacterial community and human cells. TCAA promoted iron oxidation process and resulted in sharper particle surfaces, affecting bacterial community richness differently under anaerobic and aerobic conditions.

Trihalomethanes formation enhanced by manganese chlorination and deposition in plastic drinking water pipes

Ying Yu et al.

Summary: The transformation and deposition of manganese in drinking water distribution systems can increase the formation risks of disinfection byproducts, primarily due to the accumulation of organic substances in manganese deposits and the inhibitory effect of manganese oxides on the conversion of chlorine and iodine.

Modeling iron release from cast iron pipes in an urban water distribution system caused by source water switch

Xiaodan Lin et al.

Summary: This study developed a new method combining in-situ water stagnation experiments with mathematical models and numerical simulations to predict iron release during source water switch in water distribution systems. Short-term iron release was found to be dependent on key quality parameters, while long-term release was related to pipe properties, dissolved oxygen, and total residual chlorine concentrations. Mathematical models were developed to quantitatively reveal the relationship between iron release and key quality parameters, which could be extended at the network level using EPANET-MSX. This new method facilitates water utilities in taking preventive actions to avoid red water.

Roles and Knowledge Gaps of Point-of-Use Technologies for Mitigating Health Risks from Disinfection Byproducts in Tap Water: A Critical Review

Baiyang Chen et al.

Summary: Growing concerns over water pollution and affordability have led to a rapid acceptance and development of various point-of-use devices for domestic use. However, there is still a lack of systematic knowledge on the efficiency and mechanisms of POU technologies in removing regulated and emerging DBPs. Additional research is needed to address key knowledge gaps and improve public health protection.

Field study on the transportation characteristics of PFASs from water source to tap water

Ruya Chen et al.

Summary: Long-distance raw water transportation pipelines can remove PFAS contamination to a certain extent, while the South-to-North water diversion may increase PFASs pollution risk. The combination of ozonation-biological activated carbon is more effective in removing PFASs in drinking water treatment plants. The pipeline structure and deposits can significantly influence PFAS accumulation and release.
