Synthetic and biopolymers-based antimicrobial hybrid hydrogels: a focused review

Incorporation of Saqez essential oil into polyvinyl alcohol/chitosan bilayer hydrogel as a potent wound dressing material

Summary: Currently, research is being conducted in the field of multilayer hydrogels for wound dressing. Additionally, the use of natural essential oils and their derivatives with antibacterial and antioxidant properties has gained attention due to developing bacterial resistance to common antibiotics. In this study, a novel bilayer hydrogel composed of polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan with the incorporation of Saqez essential oil (SEO) was synthesized. The results indicated that the bilayer hydrogel showed gel-type structure, specific compression, and flexibility. Moreover, increasing the concentration of SEO resulted in reduced swelling and water vapor permeability, increased water retention, and enhanced hydrophobicity. The combination of SEO in the bilayer hydrogel demonstrated strong antioxidant properties and increased antimicrobial activity. The bilayer hydrogels were found to be biocompatible, non-toxic, and blood compatible according to in vitro tests. In vivo tests showed that these bilayer hydrogels exhibited good homeostatic efficiency. Overall, these bilayer hydrogels hold great potential as wound dressings.

Silk-based hydrogel incorporated with metal-organic framework nanozymes for enhanced osteochondral regeneration

Summary: In this study, a multifunctional silk-based hydrogel incorporated with metal-organic framework nanozymes (CuTA@SF) was developed to enhance osteochondral defect (OCD) regeneration. The CuTA@SF hydrogel exhibited enhanced cell proliferation, cell viability, antioxidant and antibacterial properties in vitro. Furthermore, it promoted MSC osteogenesis and deposition of cartilage-specific extracellular matrix (ECM) even under inflammatory conditions. In vivo experiments in a rabbit OCD model showed successful in situ OCD regeneration using CuTA@SF hydrogel. Thus, CuTA@SF hydrogel is a promising biomaterial for OCD regeneration.

Summary: Rice straw contains three major biopolymers, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin, which can be converted into high-value materials. In this study, lignin was extracted from rice straw and used to fabricate biopolymer films with the addition of lemongrass essential oil nanoemulsions. The resulting hydrogel films showed good physical, structural and functional properties, with high tensile strength, biodegradability, and antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. These films could be sustainable alternatives to synthetic plastic wraps in food packaging industries.

A Novel Approach for the Treatment of Aerobic Vaginitis: Azithromycin Liposomes-in-Chitosan Hydrogel

Summary: This research aimed to prepare and evaluate several types of azithromycin (AZM)-liposomes incorporated into chitosan hydrogel (AZM-liposomal hydrogels) for the treatment of aerobic vaginitis. The AZM-liposomal hydrogels demonstrated sustained drug release, mucoadhesive properties, and inherent antimicrobial activity. Chitosan hydrogel prolonged the release of the liposomal drug and boosted its antibacterial effect. All AZM-liposomal hydrogels were biocompatible and showed suitable mechanical properties for vaginal application, confirming their potential for enhanced local therapy of aerobic vaginitis.

The results demonstrate that the hydrogel significantly accelerates diabetic wound healing, providing a feasible strategy for chronic diabetic wound repair.

3D-printed biosurfactant-chitosan antibacterial coating for the prevention of silicone-based associated infections

Summary: Infections associated with medical device surfaces are a significant concern due to biofilm formation and antibiotic resistance. This study presents a 3D-printed antimicrobial chitosan-biosurfactant hydrogel mesh that can coat silicone-based medical devices to prevent infections. The mesh structure allows for the incorporation of customized bioactive components, and the biosurfactant sophorolipids showed better antibacterial activity compared to surfactin. The resulting coatings demonstrated strong antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against Staphylococcus aureus while still being biocompatible with human dermal fibroblasts.

Summary: In recent years, the development and characterization of biomaterials for regenerative medicine and controlled release have posed significant challenges. Hydrogels are considered optimal applications in the biomedical field, particularly in tissue engineering. However, their delicate nature and low mechanical strength limit their use. Therefore, developing stronger and more stable hydrogels with increased biocompatibility is essential. Natural and synthetic polymers both have limitations, but the development of hydrogels based on mixtures of these materials can optimize their properties. Incorporating different nanoparticles can improve stability and yield various biological effects. Essential oils and drug molecules can facilitate desired biological effects and even produce a synergistic effect. The main purpose of this study is to identify the key properties required to develop sustainable polymeric scaffolds for tissue engineering without adverse environmental effects.
