Effect of operational and geometric parameters on the hydrodynamics of a Wurster coater: A CFD-DEM study

Yinqiang Song et al.

Summary: A coupled CFD-DEM method was used to study the hydrodynamics of a Wurster coater. The effects of gas velocity, gap height, tube length, and batch volume on the cycle time and residence time of particles were investigated. Increasing the central jet gas velocity u1 accelerated particle cycle but reduced coating efficiency. The gas velocity at the horizontal transport zone u2 promoted particle transport, but too high a velocity obstructed particle falling.

Hydrodynamics and mass transfer around active particles in dense gas-fluidized beds

Laura Molignano et al.

Summary: The hydrodynamics of bubbling fluidized beds of Geldart B granular solids operated at ambient temperature and at 500 degrees C are investigated. The statistical analysis shows multimodal patterns in the Probability Density Functions (PDF) of local bed voidage, with a bimodal character apparent in the emulsion phase at higher gas superficial velocities. Two phases with different porosity, LV-phase and HV-phase, are inferred to co-exist in the emulsion phase. The influence of bed hydrodynamics and expansion patterns on gas mass transfer around freely moving particles is also studied.

Modeling of single-particle char combustion under O2/H2O conditions: Effects of temperature and steam concentration

Kun Chen et al.

Summary: The study found through numerical simulations that increasing H2O concentration reduces the average temperature of char particles, and O2 consumption in the boundary layer accounts for 50% of the total O2 consumption. Higher temperatures and H2O concentrations enhance competition for O2 by homogeneous reactions.

Investigation on a single char particle movement behavior in a bubbling fluidized bed under high temperature

Wanqiang Wu et al.

Summary: In this study, the movement behavior of a single char particle in a fluidized bed was investigated using a CFD-DEM framework, and the reliability of the model was validated through experiments. It was found that the movement of the char particle was influenced by various forces, such as gravity, pressure gradient force, and collision force, and the force increased exponentially along the bed height. The findings provide guidance for optimizing the design and operation parameters of fluidized bed combustors.

Open source implementation of glued sphere discrete element method and nonspherical biomass fast pyrolysis simulation

Liqiang Lu et al.

Summary: In this research, a glued-sphere discrete element method was implemented and validated in the computational fluid dynamics software MFiX for simulating nonspherical particles. The method was applied to simulate fast pyrolysis of biomass particles in a fluidized bed and showed significant influence on particle packing height. The solver developed in this study can be used to simulate other multiphase reacting flows involving nonspherical particles.

Coupling particle scale model and SuperDEM-CFD for multiscale simulation of biomass pyrolysis in a packed bed pyrolyzer

Xi Gao et al.

Summary: Efficient biomass pyrolysis process requires a comprehensive understanding of the chemical and physical phenomena across multiple length and time scales. In this study, a multiscale computational approach integrating pyrolysis kinetics, particle scale model, and SuperDEM-CFD was developed and validated for biomass pyrolysis in a packed-bed reactor. The validation of a one-dimensional particle-scale model and SuperDEM-CFD model demonstrated accurate prediction and simulation of intraparticle and particulate interactions during biomass pyrolysis.

The Gas Interchange between Bubble and Emulsion Phases in a Pressurized Fluidized Bed by Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations

Wanqiang Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of pressure, superficial velocity, and particle size on gas interchange between bubble and emulsion phases in a high-temperature oxy-fuel fluidized bed. Both experiments and CFD simulations were used to analyze the gas interchange coefficient, which was found to decrease with increasing pressure and increase with increasing superficial velocity and particle size. The study proposes a formula to calculate the gas interchange coefficient considering the influence of pressure on the gas diffusion coefficient in a pressurized oxy-fuel fluidized bed.

Development and validation of SuperDEM-CFD coupled model for simulating non-spherical particles hydrodynamics in fluidized beds

Xi Gao et al.

Summary: A new SuperDEM-CFD coupled model was developed for simulating the hydrodynamics of non-spherical particles in fluidized beds. The model includes algorithms for modeling and distributing non-spherical particles, as well as drag models that consider particle orientation and cell voidage effects. Experimental validation was conducted, and large-scale simulations demonstrated the solver's capabilities for industrial-relevant flows.

Movement and combustion characteristics of densified rice hull pellets in a fluidized bed combustor at elevated pressures

Zhihao Yang et al.

Summary: Biomass combustion in pressurized oxy-fuel fluidized bed is a promising carbon capture technology, but the characteristics of biomass may lead to poor mixing in industrial FB combustors. The study found that pressure and atmosphere changes do not strongly affect the position distribution probability of densified rice hull pellets in pressurized oxy-fuel combustion, but may affect the distribution of particles on the bed surface and in the splash zone.
