Effect of the addition of organic wastes (cork powder, nut shell, coffee grounds and paper sludge) in clays to obtain expanded lightweight aggregates

Carlos Javier Cobo-Ceacero et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of four organic solid wastes (coffee grounds, ground nut shell, paper money sewage sludge, and cork powder) as bloating inducing agents in lightweight aggregate (LWA) manufacturing. The addition of these wastes improves the operational and technological aspects of LWAs, reducing the working temperature and promoting bloating and the development of a lightweight structure. Leachate studies confirm that the LWAs meet regulatory limits. This research highlights the potential of utilizing different organic wastes in the production of environmentally friendly LWAs, aligning with the principles of the Circular Economy.

Spent coffee grounds based circular bioeconomy: Technoeconomic and commercialization aspects

J. Rajesh Banu et al.

Summary: Coffee consumption leads to the generation of large amounts of spent coffee grounds (SCG), which contains various valuable components. Valorisation of SCG through integrated biorefinery approach not only brings more valuable products, but also enhances environmental sustainability and economic benefits. The future perspective of SCG biorefinery shows the potential for higher production of bioactive compounds and bioenergy, contributing to the development of a circular bioeconomy.

The Application of Spent Coffee Grounds and Tea Wastes as Additives in Alkali-Activated Bricks

Leopold Lee Poh Chung et al.

Summary: The traditional firing process for building bricks is not sustainable due to high temperatures and emissions, leading to a growing interest in investing in green technologies with minimal environmental impacts. This study explored the use of Spent Coffee Grounds (SCG) and Tea Waste (TW) as additives for manufacturing unfired clay bricks through alkali-activation. Results showed that samples with up to 2.5 wt% SCG and 10 wt% TW met the minimum compressive strength requirement for structural applications, highlighting the potential for sustainable construction practices.

Spent coffee grounds and tea leaf residues: Characterization, evaluation of thermal reactivity and recovery of high-value compounds

Ekaterina Sermyagina et al.

Summary: Spent coffee grounds and tea leaf residues have significant potential as bioenergy and biochemical sources, with high nitrogen and sulfur content leading to NO and SO2 release during combustion. Mass spectrometry analysis of the studied materials reveals higher heterogeneity of macromolecular composition in coffee and tea samples.

Applying a circular economy approach to valorize spent coffee grounds

S. Mayson et al.

Summary: This study explores the feasibility of using spent coffee grounds as a fuel for roasting to achieve a circular economy system. Spent coffee grounds are more energy-efficient than conventional biomass but less than fossil fuels. The integrated energy-waste management strategy can promote industrial symbiosis and value recovery in the coffee supply chain, laying the foundation for achieving a circular economy system.
