Symbiotic status alters fungal eco-evolutionary offspring trajectories

Carlos A. Aguilar-Trigueros et al.

Summary: Despite the ubiquity of host-fungal symbiotic interactions, the effects of symbiosis on the ecology and evolution of fungal spores involved in dispersal and colonization have been neglected. Through a spore morphology database, we found that symbiotic status correlated with changes in spore size, but this effect varied among different fungal phyla. Symbiosis explained more variation in spore size distribution than climatic variables, and spores of plant-associated fungi have more restricted dispersal potential compared to free-living fungi. Our study advances life-history theory by highlighting the role of symbiosis in shaping reproductive and dispersal strategies among living organisms.

Inter- and intra-species heterogeneity in germination of Aspergillus conidia

Maryam Ijadpanahsaravi et al.

Summary: Aspergilli, including Aspergillusniger, Aspergillusoryzae, Aspergillusclavatus, Aspergillusnidulans, and Aspergillusterreus, are highly abundant fungi with the ability to degrade organic material and act as pathogens. This study found that the swelling and germ tube formation dynamics of conidia from these Aspergillus species differed in pure water and water supplemented with various nutrients. Intra-species heterogeneity was also observed, except for A.terreus, with sub-populations of conidia showing different dynamics based on size and/or contrast. These findings suggest that aspergilli exhibit different competitive potentials and have bet hedging mechanisms to optimize survival.
